Pat’s Paws
IT’S
SEPTEMBER!!!! Wow what
happened! Where did the
year go????
This
is the month for our National Specialty!
I would like to wish all “Good Luck!”
Also,
I can’t forget, although by the time everyone reads this it might be a
little late! Good Luck at DOCOF! I
know we do not have a team this year, but many of us are competing
anyway! Let’s hope next
year EGRC can have a team again.
Now
for some “BUSINESS”!!!
It’s trophy time again. If
you sponsored a trophy for our Specialty last year and wish to sponsor
the same again please be in touch with our trophy Chairs Terry and Mary
Kay Russell at tjmk44@bellsouth.net.
Our premium
must be ready by the end of October, and we have set a deadline
of October 1, 2007 as the date to have our trophy donation list
finalized so don’t delay. So far, every trophy is available, so you can have your
pick!
For
October we are having a FUN DAY!!!
See the flyer in our news letter.
We should have a great day with all of our friends, and that is
two legged and, of course, our four legged ones.
Wait,
did I hear “This will be your on lead heeling, are you ready”?
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Now
my Paws are tired!

By
EGRR President Hermine Scolnik
Those of us involved in Rescue have had another busy month.
There has been happy news for Little
Bear, our 9 year old boy with malignant melanoma.
He has completed his series of melanoma treatments and is doing
very well. He is scheduled
to visit Dr. Correa in October, and if all is going well, he will be
officially adopted by his foster parents.
He will continue with his first booster in February, and his
second 6 months after that.
News on the puppy front is mixed.
Poor 7 month old Marlee was helped on her journey to the Bridge, where she was
greeted by her sister Gracie. The
other girls, Casey and Shasta,
appear to be happy playful puppies, although they are much smaller
than expected for their age. We are all hoping that they stay alive long
enough for some sort of cure to be found. Their brothers Bosco,
Tucker, and Ganero, are big strong boys and continue to thrive.
Blood samples for the entire family, except for Gracie,
were submitted to CHIC (Canine
Health Information Center) an arm of OFA.
We are hoping that their DNA
will help in identifying the gene responsible for this terrible
disease that has afflicted our puppies.
If we can eliminate this disease from our beloved Goldens,
then these puppies’ lives will not have been in vain
Our adoption team is happy to report 12 adoptions since
last month. Teddy surprised us all, because he was so sick with canine flu,
that we just didn’t know if he was going to make it, but he is a
healthy happy boy, now living in his “forever” home. Murdock was adopted by his long-time foster family who decided
they just couldn’t let him go. Casey/Jane
was adopted by Jenny at Last Chance Ranch.
Jenny has helped us in the past by forever fostering dogs that
would otherwise never find a home.
She has been asking for a girl in her middle years, and Casey/Jane
is the one. Our other adoptions include Buddy,
Pampero/Franklin, Sasha, Cuervo, Logan/Sunshine, Simba, Becky, Sammy, and
Plato. Yet another Buddy
is waiting eagerly for his medical tests to be completed, so that
his foster family can decide whether they will adopt him.
Pebbles/Lucy’s
foster family would like to adopt her, but we have decided to closely
monitor them before finalizing the adoption.
There have been some issues that still need to be resolved.
Still waiting for their “forever” homes are Pudder,
Baxter, and BamBam, who
are in loving foster homes. Still
at the Clint Moore kennel are
Zeus Bear, who is recovering
from Heartworm treatment, Fudge and
Brittney, a father and
daughter, whose owner went to jail, and Max,
an 8 month old owner surrender.
We are expecting Kaylee, a
7 month girl to join them shortly.
Eli/Shadow, a
thunderphobic boy who was turned into us for the second time, as a
stray, was transported to South of the Border by Marlene Goldman and
Barbara Sheedy. They were met there by a representative of DVGRR (Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue.)
This is the second thunderphobic dog this wonderful organization
has taken from us. There
are fewer thunderstorms in Pennsylvania, and DVGRR
has resources to work with this problem.
Dolphin/Dalton,
who I talked about last month, survived pneumonia, only to turn out to
have an aggressive streak. He
turned on the foster dad, who lovingly nursed him thru his illness,
severely biting his arm. We
had no choice but to help him on his journey to the Bridge.
Rusty, who after
almost a year in the Clint Moore kennel,
finally went to his “forever” home last September.
He was having severe emotional problems, suspected to be caused
by the very drug that was keeping him alive.
Prednisone has played havoc with his brain, but without this
drug, he cannot breathe. His
lungs were so badly damaged by the Heartworm he had when he came to us,
that he has very little lung capacity. Rusty
is thunderphobic, suffers from separation anxiety, and he also has a
barrier phobia. He cannot
be confined by baby gates or a crate and has totally destroyed his home.
After much soul searching, Rusty’s
mom has decided to take him out of his misery.
One of our adopters has been hospitalized for an extended
period of time, and requested that we take his dogs back into rescue,
since he didn’t know when he would be able to care for them again.
After a long conversation, whereby we determined that his illness
was not terminal, we decided to keep the dogs for him.
Elvis/Casey is living in a foster home in Key Largo, and by the
time you read this Rusty and Isabelle
will be in another foster home in Key Largo. All three dogs will be
able to spend time together until their owner is ready to reclaim them.
We hope it will be soon, as they miss him very much.

EGRC August 2007 Minutes
August
16, 2007
The
meeting was held at the home of Paula and Gus Fistel on August 16, 2007
and was called to order at 7:58 pm.
Members
in attendance were: Hermine Scolnik, Marlene Goldman, Pat Andrews, Ellen
Bloome, Paula Fistel, Pat Kopco, Jill Berk, Patti Rodgers, Michelle
Panetta, Deena Strauss, Diane Davis, Judy and Bernie Gilick, Jean
Fulton, Chris Spillane, Kara
Clark, Heidi Miller, and Nancy Greenbarg.
President’s Report:
There were no minutes at
the last meeting/function in July. The Club had a dinner and a movie night.
Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the last
meeting, which was May 17, 2007 as published in the June newsletter.
Additional reports from EGRC President
Pat Andrews: Due to the Board
not having an updated membership list, an error was made and those whose
memberships had expired were still receiving emails. There is one
long-time member whose membership had expired; the Board has voted to
make an exception and have this member reinstated. Her application will
be read tonight. This applicant will be an associate member until she
has fulfilled the requirements of new membership.
Paula
Fistel has volunteered to be the Show Chair, Obedience and Rally Chair
for our Specialty. We now have a Rally/Obedience Coordinator position
available. Pat will make certain with Mike LaValle that we are able to
do this. We still need a Chief Table Steward for obedience.
James
Conroy, the Specialty Coordinator for PBCDFA, (Palm Beach County Dog
Fanciers Association, Inc.) had requested us to allow the Doxies to hold
an OB and Rally trial specific to their breed. After speaking with Mike
LaValle, the Board has decided it would not be a good business decision
to allow this. The Lab club is holding its Specialty on the same date at
the same venue. It wishes to sponsor a trophy for OB and Rally for
“Highest Scoring Lab.” This option was offered to the doxie club and
to the other breeds who would have requested a breed trial.
Pat
Andrews has made changes:
Michelle
Panetta has been helpful to The Club by taking on the Secretary
position, since being elected to Treasurer in January; this was
something that she had not originally planned on doing, and it has
proved to be an overwhelming amount of work, considering her other
obligations to several organizations. Pat is appointing her assistant,
Ellen Bloome, to be the Secretary for the remainder of the term, which
will expire at the end of December.
The
statistician position is now discontinued due to lack of interest on the
part of the membership in emailing their updates to be maintained as
part of The Club’s records.
The
GRCA delegate is now Pat Andrews.
Puppy
referral will now be Marlene Goldman and Judy Gilick, so EGRC will have
a representative in Palm Beach and Broward Counties and Marlene and Judy
will work to divide Dade County.
Webmaster
Sue King is to email the membership about the password protected
information on the website; if access is needed she is to be contacted
how to access this information.
As
a reminder to the membership, the Nominating Committee is comprised of
Chair Deena Strauss, and members Kara Clark, and Hermine Scolnik. Alternates
are Judy Gilick and Barbie Keough.
The Bylaws state that the Nominating Committee is appointed by
the Board at the August meeting so President Andrews mentioned the
appointment of the Nominating Committee again so that there is no
misunderstanding as to its creation.
Proactively, the Board began contacting individuals and
confirming committee assignments earlier this year, to give the
committee extra time to review candidates for a slate, and the names of
the committee members were announced at the Thursday, April 19, 2007
General/Board Meeting. Two
board positions and four officer positions are open; please contact the
committee if you wish to be nominated.
VP Report:
Kara
reports that Tail’s End has not returned her calls regarding the
rescheduled Grooming Seminar. The date is Saturday or Sunday, the 13th
or 14th of October. Ellen Bloome has volunteered to call Family Dog
Central to see if they are willing to let us use their site.
The
September meeting Date is the 27th at the home of Pat and
Gary Andrews at 7 pm.
Secretary’s Report:
Michelle
has received samples of Nature’s Recipe, a new food. Samples available
are 24 bags to a case; and 3 cases are available.
Michelle has requested these on behalf of EGRC.
These samples will be used as some of the prizes at our October
meeting, the 6th of October, at Quiet Waters Park. It will be a Fun
Day at the Park. EGRC will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs. A
list will be available on the website to sign up for which food each
member volunteers to bring. A head count is needed for the hamburger and
hotdog amounts. This meeting is for the dogs!
An
updated membership list was sent to Sue King. Pat also sent the list to
the Board.
There
was a special membership reading for Jean Fulton; she was unanimously
reinstated.
It
was noted that membership applications should have the sponsor’s
signature.
Treasurer’s Report:
This was read by Michelle Panetta and given for the months of June, July
and August but will not appear in the on-line newsletter until it is
password protected in accordance with the Board’s request.
Net change between June and August was a reduction of
approximately $240.
Committee Reports:
Sunshine:
Cards sent out to Ellen Lindenfeld, Cathy Kollman, Patti Dunham, Skip
and Sandy Dunham, Peter Clark, and Diane Davis.
The
Board meeting on September 6th at Pat Andrews’ home is to discuss the
revised point schedules for the end of year trophies.
Perpetual
Trophies need to be back for engraving by November 1st. Heidi Miller has
volunteered to bring and pick up the trophies from Ft. Lauderdale. It is
now up to the Club members to get their trophies to Heidi by 11/1/2007.
Michelle needs to have the information for the trophies by
November 1st also.
Unfinished
Business: Nancy Greenbarg no longer wishes to coordinate and organize a
hunting seminar at this time.
New
Business: Ellen Bloome is working with the American Red Cross to
coordinate a pet CPR class as a Club fundraiser this fall. Details will
be available by September’s meeting.
Respectfully
submitted by:

GRCA Sweepstakes
Guidelines
Editor’s
Note: The following are the new guidelines approved by the Golden
Retriever Club of America, Inc. (GRCA), which is EGRC’s parent club.
It is a GRCA requirement that these guidelines be followed by any
club hosting either a Regional or National Specialty.
Although following these guidelines are optional for those clubs
hosting Independent Specialties, EGRC’s Show Committee has
historically chosen to adhere to the GRCA’s regulations, with the
exception of the Veterans Classes, allowing Goldens as young as 7 years
to enter.
The
mission of the GRCA Sweepstakes is to provide a competition where
breeders and owners can showcase their puppies and veterans. It was
established to encourage owner/handlers to show their own dogs and to
share the results of their breeding program, the potential of their
young dogs and the longevity and structural soundness of their veterans
with other breeders and exhibitors.
The
following guidelines are mandatory for Sweepstakes held at GRCA National
and Regional Specialties and are strongly recommended for local member
club specialties.
TIME:
Sweepstakes should be held so as not to conflict with the judging of the
regular classes. This can be done by scheduling Sweepstakes for early
morning before the regular classes begin, or the previous evening if
suitable arrangements can be made and adequate time is available.
JUDGE:
It is recommended that, as a first consideration, the judge be a
qualified breeder of retrievers with at least 10 years experience in
their breed and have attended at least two obedience trials and two
field events with water tests. If such a person is not available, a
qualified breeder of sporting dogs or a person working toward AKC
approval in the sporting breeds may be invited to judge. All sweepstakes
judges must be given a copy of the sweepstakes rules prior to their
assignment, preferably with their contract.
PREMIUM LIST INFORMATION:
Detailed information for the premium list is included on the
accompanying page in a form which needs only minor editing to be ready
for submission to a superintendent or show secretary.
1.
Clubs are given the option of offering ribbons or rosettes for
individual class placements.
2.
Add any trophies offered after the Ribbon/Rosette information.
ALTERNATIVES TO HOLDING SWEEPSTAKES:
The holding of a Sweepstakes is optional to the host club. If the host
club chooses not to offer a Sweepstakes, then it is recommended that,
after the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch have been selected and before
the Best of Breed Class begins, the winners of the Puppy Dog and Puppy
Bitch classes (6-9 months and 9-12 months) be brought into the ring.
From these four exhibits the awards of Best Puppy and Best of Opposite
Sex to Best Puppy shall be made by the person scheduled to judge the
Best of Breed class. The winners of the 12-18 Month classes are not
eligible for this award as they are not puppies by AKC definition. Dark
green rosettes shall be awarded to the Best Puppy and Best of Opposite
Sex to Best Puppy. There shall be no prize money and the awarding of
trophies is optional. The information and awards shall be included in
the Premium List.
PREMIUM LIST INFORMATION:
ALL SWEEPSTAKES CLASSES
INCLUDING VETERANS AND BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES
HANDLER:
The handler of a Sweepstakes exhibit must be either the owner, co-owner,
breeder or member of their immediate family as they are listed on file
with the American Kennel Club as of the closing date for the show for
which the Sweepstakes entry is being made. Immediate family is defined
as husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter or
legal domestic partner. Step children and legal wards are also included
in this definition. In-laws and grandchildren are not considered to be
immediate family members. No other individual may take the entry into
the ring during judging or check-in.
The
following individuals are excluded from showing an exhibit in
sweepstakes unless they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or
co-own the entry with a member of their immediate family (as defined
above) or a legal domestic partner:
Any
individual listed as an agent on any dog in any regular or non-regular
class.
Any
individual with an Agent number including, but not limited to an AKC
Registered Handler Number or Professional Handlers Association (PHA)
number.
To
avoid confusion or question, it is recommended that a photocopy of the
registration certificate be included with the entry for a co-owned
exhibit.
Disabled
or physically challenged handlers are encouraged to show their own dogs
and every effort will be made to accommodate them. Some things which
might be done to assist them are: making sure the ring gate opening is
wide enough for a wheel chair; making sure the surface is as level and
smooth as possible; placing slower handlers at the end of the line or
having them gait their dogs together; allowing someone else to push an
exhibitor's wheelchair, providing they do not handle the dog; making
sure stewards and judges face a handler who is hearing impaired when
speaking to them; permitting the use of crutches or canes.
Best in Sweepstakes Classes.
It is required that the same person who showed the dog to a first place
in a Sweepstakes class will also show the dog in the Best in Sweeps
class. However, if that person should have more than one dog in the Best
in Sweepstakes class, someone else is permitted to show the additional
winner. That person should meet the handler definitions above. Only in
cases where there is not another owner, co-owner, breeder, co-breeder or
immediate family member available, should another person take the dog
into the Best in Sweeps class. It is understood that there would be no
financial benefit to that individual. Individuals who have an AKC
Handler number, a PHA number or are listed as agent on any dog in the
regular or non-regular classes may not show a sweepstakes entrant unless
they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or co-own the entry with
a member of their immediate family (as defined above) or a legal
domestic partner.
