Note: This little poem has been circulating around the ‘Net
under various titles, including a Puppy’s Prayer” and a
“Cat’s Prayer.” Thanks,
Bob Lampe, for finding this gem, whose author is unknown. |
Now I lay me down to sleep. The king-size bed is soft and deep. I sleep right in the center groove. My human being can hardly move. I've trapped her legs, she is tucked in
tight. And here is where I pass the night. No one disturbs me or dares intrude Til morning comes and I want food! I sneak up slowly and it begins, My nudging's on my human's chin. She wakes up slowly and smiles and
shouts, "You precious pest....5 more
minutes, now cut it out!" But morning's here and it's time to
play. I always seem to get my way. So thank you, Lord, for giving me This human person that I see. The one who hugs and holds me tight And shares her bed with me at night. Author Unknown |

EGRC GETS “Schooled”
Canine
ambassadors from EGRC had a great time at two Broward public schools
last month, demonstrating responsible dog ownership and obedience.
Toasty’s Perfect Pitch
CD, RN, “AJ,” owned by EGRC President Pat Andrews and Amberwood’s
Celtic Gold Fiona CD, RAE, CGC, TDI, "Fiona,” owned by EGRC
Vice President Kara Clark, visited Stranahan High School in Fort
Lauderdale and Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary School in Lauderhill.
“AJ”
and “Fiona” showed close
to 50 students in the magnet medical science program at Stranahan High
School some basic obedience routines, while Pat and Kara discussed
breeding and health considerations of not only the Golden Retriever, but
canines in general. Some of these students see veterinary science as a
future career.
“Fiona,” “AJ,”
Pat and Kara also participated in a career day at Lauderhill Paul Turner
Elementary School where Pat and Kara discussed all the different careers
that are available to dog lovers, from obedience trainer--to AKC
judge--to veterinarian--to approximately 300 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
Some of the students were kind enough to send letters afterwards
and excerpts follow below. AKC Public Education Coordinator Linda
Rappaport provided the overall management of both events and took the
photos below for everyone to enjoy!

Letters From Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary
“Thank you Ms. Pat Andrews, Ms. Clark and Ms. Rappaport.
. .I want to thank you for teaching me what to do when you want to pet a
dog. You just ball up your
hands and put them in front of the dog’s face so that it can smell
your hands and then rub them under the chin, not on top of the head. And first you have to ask the owner! Shavon”
“I really liked AJ and Fiona. They are really pretty.
I learned how to train a dog by feeding it treats when it does
something right and you can also train it with a long leash.
Zaynahrose.”
“Your dogs are amazing; I like both of them. . .the
impact that you have on me is that I like animals and when I grow up I
want to be a scientist or a zoo keeper.
Kemani”
“I will remember the important things you told me. .
.when I get caught up in a bad situation with a dog with a tail low
between its legs I will always remember to stand like a tree. Roberto”
“I learned what to do . . .if you want to pet the dog
you’ll have to ask for permission and if they say yes you’ll put
your hand into a fist and make them smell it. . . Roshod”
“. . .I wish you and AJ can come to our school again.

“I learned a lot about dogs. . .one time I was riding my
bike and I got attacked and I didn’t know what to do but I do now.

By
EGRR President Hermine Scolnik
2007 has been the strangest year that I have experienced
since I became active in EGRR, in January of 2002. From January through the first week of April we took in 36
dogs, including 10 puppies. We
were all getting very nervous – if things continued at this pace, we
would have taken in 150 dogs by year’s end.
Fortunately things slowed down – actually they slowed down so
much that no dogs came in for several weeks, and when I went on a well
earned vacation, EGRR had only 2 available dogs in foster homes, no
Hotline calls, and no Goldens in the Shelters.
We were anticipating that this would change in June with the
“Christmas puppies” but it didn’t even wait until then.
I was in JFK Airport when my cell phone rang; it was Jane telling
me about the 3 dogs coming in that day, and the one coming to us later
in the week. In a short
time we now had 6 new dogs.
Since my last report Zimmie,
Summer, Sunset/Sunny, Harley, Magic, Honey, Boo-Boo/Boom-Boom,
Boomer/Mary McBoomer, and Cherokee
have been happily adopted. Sugar
and Gracie, two sweet girls, are just waiting for their
foster-to-adopt families to sign the paperwork. It was all these
adoptions that depleted our store of available dogs. Morgan is now back in Key Largo, in a foster home, waiting for his
“forever” parents to show up. He
was the poor boy whose owner had passed away. We now have two other boys who have lost their dad – 9
year old Murdock, who
actually saw his first and second owner die in front of him, and his
Golden sibling, 3 year old Buddy. We would like to keep these boys together, since seeing
their owner die was trauma enough for them.
They actually were left in their home with neighbors looking
after them, for almost a month. Eight
year old, Pudder, 2 year old Riley,
7 year old Cozmo, 1 year
old Pebbles, and Heartworm
positive, 18 month old Bailey, round
out our pack.
Tragedy has struck our litter of pups.
Little Gracie, the runt of the litter, had to be helped on her journey to
the Rainbow Bridge at the tender age of 12 weeks.
She had not been growing like her littermates, weighing only a
little over 12 lbs., while the rest of the litter was between 24 and 30
lbs. It was determined she
was in kidney failure, having been born with two malfunctioning kidneys.
I have never cried so much over someone else’s dog and someone
else’s child. Her owner was 15 years old and this was her first dog.
Another one of the pups, Bailey/Bosco
has a serious heart murmur. This
helps to make a case for purchasing puppies from reputable breeders, who
have gotten health clearances on the parents, and certainly not breeding
littermates, as were the parents of this litter.
Following this advice, we were fortunate to help Anna,
Gracie’s owner, find a new puppy from such a breeder, in Deland.
Our six surviving puppies graduated from puppy kindergarten on
May 29th, and are beginning basic obedience classes, as
required by our provisional adoption contract.
As usual, we are still in need of foster homes, and many of
our new rescues are being boarded at vets’ offices. We really could
use a few foster homes without dogs, which would enable us to safely
take in Shelter dogs, without the risk of spreading disease. If you know
someone who loves Goldens, and would like to foster, please ask them to
contact EGRR.
Help Our
California Friends Defeat AB 1634
Unfortunately, despite emails and faxes from many breeders
and dog owners in California and throughout the nation, including our
own EGRC members, Assembly Bill 1634 was approved by the Appropriations
Committee and will now make its way before the California General
Assembly and Senate. As a
reminder, this bill, despite its many amendments, could still result in
the mandatory neuter of performance dogs and curtail breeding.
The AKC continues to urge all California breeders and
concerned dog owners to write or visit their Assembly member and voice
strong opposition to AB 1634. The AKC says that Fridays are the
best day to visit with the Assembly
members at their district office.
What can we at EGRC do?
If you know of anyone in California—friends, relatives or
breeders—encourage them to contact their Assembly member to vote
against this bill. If they
do not know who their Assembly member is, have them copy and paste this
link: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html.
All they need to do is enter their California zip code and their
representative will pop up. The
AKC is encouraging all California dog owners that oppose this bill to
contact their representatives.
Editor’s
Postscript: In addition to
the AKC, the Golden Retriever Club of America, (our parent
organization), and EGRC, have both gone on record as officially opposing
AB 1634.
An EGRC Farewell
As
we all know, when a loss occurs to a friend of EGRC, it’s as if it
happens to one of our own members.
Many of us were saddened to hear that Mid-FloridaGRC member
Camille N. Doehring lost, within the span of less than two months, three
close members of the family: her sister Dee, Mischief
Magik Y Dont U Stay, “Scumpy,” who was nearly 10, and Mischief Magik Uptown Girl,
NA, NAJ, “Tessa,” who passed away two days after her 8th
birthday.
Camille
is part of the “EGRC family.” She
served as our Club’s Chief Conformation Steward at our second annual
Specialty, while we were still in our infancy in terms of hosting dog
shows, and did an excellent job. That offer to help in those early days
can not, and should not, be forgotten.
Camille
sent the following note to EGRC President Pat Andrews: “Please express
my heartfelt thanks to the members of EGRC for the
sympathy cards. It is gestures like this that have made this time
a
little easier for me. This was very kind and thoughtful and
I appreciate it very much.”
“Tessa”
had JAM’d at the
Mid-FloridaGRC Specialty last year, and Camille honored EGRC this year
with “Tessa’s” entry in
our Specialty in both Veteran Sweepstakes and Veterans. EGRC extends its condolences to Camille on the loss of her
sister and on her Goldens. EGRC
Historian Susie Scribner caught “Tessa”
and Camille in a happy moment at our show and here’s hoping everyone
enjoys this memory.

EGRC May 2007 Minutes
Thursday,
May 17, 2007
The
meeting was held at the home of Pat and Gary Andrews.
Members
in attendance: Pat Andrews, Ellen
Bloome, Heidi Miller, Nancy Greenbarg, Pamela Oxenberg, Diane
Davis, Kara Clark, Linda Share, Andy Share, Cathy Kollman, Linda
Rappaport, Judy Gilick, Bernie Gilick, Paula Fistel, Michele Panetta,
Pat Kopco, Theresa Pennington, Melinda Pariso, Vivian and Lionel
Zaretsky, Deena Strauss. Guests:
Barbara Silverman and Yvonne P. Herrera.
Meeting was called
to order at 7:45 pm.
President’s
Report: Pat Andrews reported having some corrections to the
minutes from last month’s meeting.
She stated as follows: The
first reading in March for the Myers family that was corrected in the
April minutes to reflect the first reading in March should not have been
corrected. It has always been and will hold including, with this Board
that in addition to the dues, the application with two sponsors and the
Code of Ethics will be signed and presented to The Club for the first
reading to take place. Further
corrections to last month’s minutes: First readings were for Barbara
Silverman, Yvonne P. Herrera, and Erica Bigot. Second readings: Jane and
Greg Myers, and Randi and John Mosler.
The
second readings that were done on the Myers and Moslers memberships at
the April meeting were out of order, as they were in violation of EGRC
Bylaws. Pat Andrews
requests that these May minutes reflect the corrections of the April
minutes. There was no objection.
Pat
also informed the membership of an EGRC bylaw ruling from AKC. Our
Bylaws state that applicants that live out of our geographic area
(tri-county: Dade, Broward and Palm Beach) can be Associate Members of
our club only. It was reported that the present board discovered this
when a meeting was held to review the Bylaws and policies and
procedures, on April 3, 2007. Prior boards had interpreted that such
members had an option of becoming either Associate or voting members.
Therefore, due to this error in interpretation of the Bylaws, any
member that was voted in that lives out of our geographic area prior to
April 3, 2007 is grandfathered in, as long as they wish to retain that
membership. The AKC advised EGRC that since the date of that discovery,
which was that meeting, the BOD is duty-bound to honor The Club’s
Bylaws. Both the Myers and the Mosler families were told of our Club’s
error and were offered Associate Membership. One family, the Moselers,
has requested to become Associate Members and has donated the difference
in dues to The Club. One family, the Myers, has chosen not to join our
Club at this time. Secretary/treasurer Michele Panetta will issue a
refund check to the Myers, and note that the Moslers wish to have the
overage donated to EGRC.
The
Board was polled and it was decided not to go against the AKC or it’s
ruling on our Bylaws.
Pat
presented a second item for The Club. Due to the discussion about the
possibility of a 4-day cluster being scheduled on the same weekend as
our Specialty, she spoke to the AKC Director of Event Operations and was
advised NOT to give up our date. March 7, 2008 is our date; no one can
have Goldens at a show within 100 miles from our Specialty on that date.
If it comes to pass that the clubs are going to hold a 4-day cluster at
the Palm Beach Fairgrounds, then they will have to contend with either
having our Specialty as part of their show or they will not have a
Golden entry and cannot hold an All Breed, Obedience, or a Rally Trial.
Unless we as a Club choose to relinquish that date, it cannot be taken
from us, Pat said. A more pressing issue is that we are without a Show
Chair, she added.
Vice President’s Report:
Pat requests that we cancel the June meeting. July 1 is the Jeff Pepper
Seminar. The July 21st meeting will be dinner and a movie at the home of
Linda and Andy Share at 7 pm. The August meeting will take place @ 7 pm
on the 16th at the home of Paula and Gus Fistel.
Sunshine:
Terrie will email Patti Rogers
regarding a Get Well Soon card for Jerrie Morrison.
Treasurer's Report:
A verbal report was given by
Michele Panetta; as per the request of the Board, the balance will not
appear in the on-line newsletter; this balance includes a $30 check from
Kara’s (January dues check), minus $300. Since the storage facility is
now $81/mo, we would need 3 new family members or a large function to
raise enough money to cover this bill. We are now charging $1/brag for
announcements at the meeting:
1.
Kara Clark: Goldruls Good
Faerie, ‘The Weasel,’ got her CD
on Saturday and she is now retired and moving to California.
2.
Diane Davis’ Sprint
got first place @ the Lab Specialty with 197 in Open B.
3.
Terrie Pennington: Calypso’s Purr-cedes Benz, ‘Briggs,’ WD at Vero Beach for 2
points and also went BOW; Calypso’s
Booty Call from Pekay ‘Hoochie’ went RWB
in Miami and BIM at Vero.
4.
Bernie Gilick: Goldruls on
the Road to Oz ‘Garland’ got her first 2 legs of her CD.
5.
Nancy Greenbarg: Cuervo won 2 back to back shows. Chelsea won her first point.
Secretary's
Report: Second
readings on Patty Dunham, who will remain an Associate Member until she
attends one function; Barbara Silverman as a Single member, and was
present at the meeting, Yvonne Herrera, as a Family Member, who was also
present at the meeting, Erica Bigot, as an Associate Membership until it
has been verified that her EGRC requirements of having attended a
function as a guest of a member have been fulfilled, and Sharon Bennett,
as a Family Member, who has already attended and worked diligently at an
EGRC function. All new members were voted in.
