Celebrating “Man’s Best Friend” Through Art
The
newest exhibit at the Cornell Museum of Art, titled, “For The
Love of Dogs,” features more than 200 paintings, sculptures
and photographs. Two EGRC Goldens owned by Hermine Scolnik,
“Mollie” and “Kasey,” have their portraits on display.
“Mollie” and the dearly departed “Kasey” were painted by
a local artist in honor of their therapy work.

Pat’s Paws
WELL!!!!
When I Wished Everyone Good Luck last month who knew that we
would have so many new Champions to brag about this month!!!!
First,
I would like to say that our “sister club,” Mid-Florida, had a
wonderful specialty. I know
that they are already planning next year’s specialty.
If you’re like me, you can hardly wait!
This
past weekend in Orlando, for the 4 day cluster, starting with
Mid-Florida’s Specialty, I have been a part of something that many of
us have not witnessed in a long time.
That something was “SPORTSMANSHIP!” What a great feeling it
was when we all started cheering for the various dogs and handlers as
they won—or even if they didn’t.
We were still proud of them.
There were so many wins, but one win which will be a very
memorable win for one of our prior EGRC Presidents’ is Margie Sarkin,
whose bitch won Winners Bitch/Best Opposite Sex on Friday, June 22,
2007! Yes, “Largo,” “DRUM ROLL PLEASE,” is now known as “CH Goldruls Key
To Par A Dice TD, JH, VC, CCA!!! “Largo”
was handled by one of our Club members, Caroline Roetzer, to finish her
Championship. We all were
hooting and hollering and crying tears of joy, when Caroline and “Largo” were making the final go around with the judge, then
with him pointing to Caroline and “Largo,”
which was his statement that they were awarded Winners Bitch.
This is Margie’s first Champion and first home-bred Champion
and the beginning of many more.
Not
to slight anyone who has any other brags to report, but EGRC now is
sporting 5—YES--that is FIVE
new champions in the Club. Now
I hope I do not leave anyone out. In
addition to Margie’s “Largo,”
there was Dennis Williams who finished his bitch, “CH
EagleRidge's Rude Awakening, “Pounce,” Barbara Tucker who finished her bitch, “CH Fallchase
Fancy Pants, BISS, "Fancy," and Karen Brady who finished her
dog, “CH Karagold’s Play
Ball!, “Babe,” all at the
Orlando Cluster; the fifth one was Trish Becraft who heard the good news
about one of her dogs, now “CH
Calypso’s Purr-Cedes Benz, “Briggs,” finishing up in
Pittsburgh, PA. Congratulations everyone!
This
month we are bringing back our Dinner and a Movie social.

By
EGRR President Hermine Scolnik
We at EGRR were so excited about our litter of puppies!
We provided them with the finest veterinary care, placed them in
loving foster homes, carefully screened the applicants and made wise
choices in the placements. We
even provided puppy kindergarten – everything to get these little ones
off to a good start, but nothing we did or could do, would prevent the
damage done to these little ones by irresponsible breeding.
Intact littermates, living in the same household were the parents
of these babies. Last month
I reported that little Gracie, born
with 2 malfunctioning kidneys, was helped on her journey to the Bridge,
and that little Bailey/Bosco was
suffering from a serious heart murmur.
We just received the news that Amber/Shasta
is going into renal failure like her sister.
The family has been told that she has 3 months to a year to live,
and must now decide when to let her go.
I have done some research on Juvenile Renal Failure and now know
that when one puppy in a litter is affected, it can be a fluke, but when
there is more than one, it is definitely genetic. Since the parents are
so young, less than 2 years old, they too may be more than just
carriers, and may be affected, because this disease can surface up to
the age of 2. We are now
very worried about Flappy, Sandy,
and the rest of this litter
Another disease has struck a rescue dog.
Little Bear, one of
the sweetest and most wonderful dogs I have ever met, has been diagnosed
with malignant melanoma. This
9 year old boy was selected to be our first “Seniors for Seniors”
dog. He was placed as a
foster dog with a couple in their seventies, and once they decided to
adopt him, we were going to continue to pay his medical bills.
In this way, the people and dog could share lots of love with
each other, and the human part of the relationship, living on a fixed
income, would not have to worry about doggy doctor bills. Of course, when we decided to begin this program, we
didn’t figure on the cost of the new melanoma vaccine. We are now trying to raise money through donations to help
pay for Little Bear’s treatment.
He will need 4 shots, at $701 each, and a booster 6 months later.
Any and all donations will be gladly accepted.
Since my last report Harley,
Honey/Sierra, Bailey, Sugar, Cozmo, and Riley have been happily adopted.
Gracie’s mom has
been doing a lot of business travel and hasn’t had the time to
complete her adoption paperwork, but she is as good as adopted, as are Maggie, Ginger, and Little
Bear. Morgan is still
enjoying the good life in Key Largo, but his prospective “forever”
dad will be coming to meet him once he is medically cleared. It looks as
if we are going to separate Murdock
and Buddy.
They have actually been separated for awhile now, since Buddy
had medical issues after neutering and Murdock
went to a foster home without him.
Now we have another pair of brothers – Max
and Jerry, but these 3
year old boys really can’t be separated. They panic if one goes out
for a walk without the other. Pudder’s
adoption didn’t work out since she and the cat got along like oil
and water. We now know –
no cats for Pudder.
Pebbles was placed as a foster-to-adopt with a former
adopter, but she turned out to be too much puppy for the resident dog,
so now she too is looking for her “forever’ home.
We have been able to work around our shelter dog moratorium
by joining forces with Allan Babcock Dog and Cat Rescue.
They have the means to isolate shelter dogs, so once the Goldens
are pulled from the shelters, either by their volunteers or ours, they
will serve as an intermediary, getting them vetted and boarded until
deemed free of contagion. Once
posted on our website, we hope to quickly find “forever” homes. We
do lose a little control this way, but at least the dogs are being kept
alive. If only we had more foster homes, especially those without dogs,
we could do more for the shelter dogs.
Call
To Action On California’s Proposed AB 1634
Editor’s Note: The
following information is provided courtesy of the AKC, of which EGRC is
a licensed club.
California Assembly Bill 1634, known as the California
Healthy Pets Act, has been assigned to the Senate Business, Professions,
and Economic Development Committee and the Senate Local Government
Committee. The bill seeks to require the mandatory spaying or
neutering of dogs or cats over four months of age, unless the owner
acquires an intact animal permit.
AB 1634 will first be heard by the Senate Business,
Professions, and Economic Development Committee on Monday, July 9th.
At this time, it is imperative that breeders and concerned dog
owners focus their efforts on this committee. Out of state dog
fanciers are invited to contact the committee members and express their
opposition to the bill. Letters must be sent to the committee by 5 P.M., Monday, July, 2nd,
to ensure that opposition is noted for the official bill analysis.
Again, please focus your efforts on the Senate Business,
Professions, and Economic Development Committee. In the event the
bill passes this committee, the AKC will then focus efforts on the
Senate Local Government Committee.
Provided in the next paragraphs is a list of the committee
members with email addresses and a sample letter:

Sample Letter:
I am writing you today because I am
concerned about Assembly Bill 1634, a measure that would require
mandatory spaying/neutering of dogs and cats over four months of age
unless the owner qualifies for and purchases an intact animal permit.
Although I do not live in California,
I know of those who have traveled to the state with intact dogs to
participate in dog shows. While Assemblyman Levine has amended the bill
to provide an exemption to visitors from other states that travel to
California with their intact animals, passage of the bill will
negatively impact attendance at California dog shows. Show participants
do not want to spend money in a state or jurisdiction that has adopted
anti-dog or anti-breeding legislation.
Mandatory
spay/neuter is an ineffective solution to animal control problems
because it fails to address the heart of the issue—irresponsible
ownership. These laws are
extremely difficult to enforce and can be evaded by irresponsible animal
owners by not licensing their pets. It will hurt responsible breeders
and owners who raise healthy, well cared-for dogs.
Responsible owners who are already
complying with local animal control laws will be unfairly punished by AB
1634, while irresponsible owners will continue to make problems for the
community and local shelters. Concentrating
animal control efforts on dogs whose behavior demonstrates that they are
a problem for the community would be a much better use of taxpayer
funds.
I respectfully ask that you support
responsible owners and breeders by opposing AB 1634.
Sincerely,
July Brags
EGRC
celebrates the “Red, White and Blue” not only during July, but
throughout the year! Just look at all these placements! There’s even a
purple here and there. The Florida Gators may brag about their “Fantastic
O4’s” but EGRC can brag about its “Fabulous Finishin’ Fives:”
those Golden Retrievers who became CH’s
the same weekend—“Babe,” “Briggs,” “Fancy,” “Largo,” and
“Pounce.”
WOW!!! Let’s hope to repeat! Whoo
hoo!
Agility
Cassidy’s
Baby CD, RA, MX, MXJ, AXP, AJP, NF, “Lucy,” got
a nice double Q at the
Orlando Dog Training Club's Agility Trial on Sunday June 17, 2007!!!
She runs in EXBSTD 20" and EXBJWW 20." “Lucy” was owner/handled by Judy Leitzsch. “Lucy” has proven her versatility in a number of different
venues, with brags in Obedience
and Rally this month!
However,
Judy says that “Lucy’s”
roommate, Buddy, CD, RN, AX, MXJ,
NF, “Buddy,” was the real star at the Orlando trials.
He finished with a First
Place in the EXBJWW 24" class!!!
He ran his little heart out. Yeah! Judy couldn't be prouder
of him.
Breed
Karagold’s
Play Ball!, “Babe,” owned and loved by Karen Brady and Beverly Brimacomb, took WD
and BW twice, for two more Majors,
a 4-Pointer and a 5-Pointer
and finished his CH on
Saturday, June 23, 2007 in Orlando!!! “Babe”
finished with THREE Majors, his first occurring at EGRC’s Inaugural Specialty, which
was his first 4 Points!
“Babe” is bred by
Karen and Don Williquette.
Karen
and Don are also very happy about “Babe’s”
new CH for another very
important reason. His
accomplishment made his dam, UUD
UACHX OTCH KaraGold's Head Over Heels, UDX3 OA
OAJ, CGC, TDI, TT “Nike,”
an Outstanding Dam!!! “Nike”
is bred by Karen and owned by Don.
Margie Sarkin is very happy to report that a
member of the Goldruls Gang finished her CH
in style on Friday, June 22, 2007.
Taking the 4 Point Major, going
WB/BOS at the Brevard Kennel
Club, Inc. Show, under Judge R.J. Shreve, was Goldruls
Key To Par A Dice TD, JH, VC, CCA, “Largo,” perfectly presented
by Caroline Roetzer!!! This
was “Largo’s” THIRD Major!
Caroline also showed “Largo”
the day before at the Mid-FloridaGRC Specialty, and they also made a
very good team, taking the Major
RWB under Judge Col. Jon Chase.
Margie said it was great to have “Largo”
finish near her “backyard” here in Florida with all her friends
around! Next stop is Texas
for some more shows, and then some obedience trials since a VCX
title is also in her future! She just needs two more points.
“Largo” is owned,
loved and bred by Margie. Margie sent us a photo of “Largo” on her way to her CH!
CH Goldruls Key To Par A Dice TD, JH,
VC, CCA “Largo”
|

|
“Largo”
takes WB/BOW under
Judge Mrs. Beth G. Speich with Professional Handler Lindsay
McDowell! “Largo”
was just getting warmed up at this point.
She would finish her CH
with a bang, taking her 3rd Major, a 4-pointer, closer
to home in Orlando one month later.
“Largo” is
owned and bred by Margie Sarkin.

Kristi
Sachtleben also has some brags from Orlando to report.
Ajan's Easy To Love,
“Treasure,” that she co-owns with breeder Mimi Mendia, came in Second
in Am-Bred at the Mid-FloridaGRC Specialty!
“Treasure” also
put on a great performance on Friday, and came in First
in Am-Bred at the Brevard Kennel Club, Inc. Show and repeated that feat
on Sunday at the Space Coast Kennel Club of Palm Bay Inc. Show!!!
She was handled at each of these shows by Sally Anne Rowland.
What is incredible is that “Treasure”
and Sally Anne had not worked together before Thursday and “Treasure” was entered in Am-Bred rather than Open, according
to Kristi, because Sally Anne's Open spot was taken. “Treasure”
could not be shown Saturday, at the Central Florida Kennel Club, Inc.
show, as Mimi, “Treasure’s”
breeder, was judging sweeps that day.
Kristi thinks it's a great start for this team!
She wants to say thank you to Sally Anne and she wishes she could
have been there to watch and enjoy the fun after the show.
Kristi
also send her congratulations to Sally Anne on her other wins that
weekend, and also to EGRC members Terrie Pennington, Dennis Williams and
Barbara Tucker for finishing their Goldens! Kristi says “Way To Go
EGRC!”
The
Fallchase van had to make a lot of room for all the pretty rosettes and
trophies, when the gang got ready to head back home from Orlando.
First, at the Mid-Florida Specialty on Thursday, June 21, 2007, CH
Scion Karagold Dreamin N Schemin, “Peyton," was fourth in 8-10 Veteran Bitch Sweeps under Judge Patty Pace! "Peyton"
also was second in the
regular 8-10 Veteran Bitch Class under Judge Col. Jon Chase,
owner/handled by Barbara Tucker each time.
Int’l
CH Fallchase Call Of The South, "Ashley,"
was third in the Brood Bitch
Class with CH Fallchase Miles
Marker, BOSS, “Miles,” and CH Fallchase Tucker The Remarkable, “Tucker,” as her get. On
Friday, at the Brevard KC Inc. Show, "Miles"
was BOB over 80+ entries including 6 Specials!!! Barbara says they
didn’t do anything in Group, but just competing against so many
incredible Goldens earlier in the day was a thrill! Barbara sent a photo
of “Ashley,” commemorating
her fantastic win with “Miles,”
and “Tucker” at the
Specialty!

On Saturday, Barbara’s team was not done
winning. “Peyton” was second
in the regular 8-10 Veteran Bitch Class under Mimi Mendia at
the supported entry at the Central Florida KC Inc. show!
The last day, Sunday, at the Space Coast Kennel
Club of Palm Bay Inc. Show, the Fallchase gang took it all.
Fallchase Fancy Pants,
BISS, "Fancy," was WB and BOS for a 4
Point Major which finished her and made her a new CH!!!
“Fancy” finished under
two years of age with THREE
Majors! Her buddy "Miles" was BOB
for a SECOND time in three
days over 6 Specials! Barbara says that although they didn't do anything
in the Sporting Group, it sure was fun just being in there! Five local
“kids” finished over the weekend in Orlando!!! Barbara says
she doesn’t think that has EVER
happened since she’s been in dogs.
There were LOTS OF HAPPY PEOPLE! Hooray for Florida Goldens!
Terrie
Pennington reports on her brags from Calypso. CH Karagold’s Tyme
T’Work D’Magic, CD, JH, VCX, SDHF, “Disney,” came out of
retirement at the Tampa shows just for practice with his buddy Sally
Anne Rowland to get ready for the Veteran Sweeps at the Mid-FloridaGRC
Specialty the following week. Apparently, the boy has still got it in
him as Sally Anne and “Disney”
won BOB and a Group 4 in
Tampa!!! This was Sally Anne’s first time handling a Special and the
first Group Placement she has earned. Terrie and the rest of us say
“Great job Sally Anne!”
The
following weekend, “Disney”
won Best Veteran In Specialty
Sweeps at MFGRC under Patty Pace and Best
Veteran Of Opposite Sex In Specialty Sweeps
under Mimi Mendia! “Disney”
is owned and loved by Terrie.
Calypso’s Booty Call From Pekay,
“Hoochie,” won her Sweeps
class both days as well and her regular class on Saturday and Sunday
when she was shown by co-owner Sally Anne. “Hoochie”
is co-owned and bred by Terrie.
On
Saturday, at the Central Florida Kennel Club, Inc. show, CH Calypso’s 4 Rings Ain’t Enough CD, “Bradshaw,” was BOB
and placed Third in the Sporting Group, breeder/owner handled by Terrie!
Last,
but certainly not least, Calypso also has a new CH to report. Calypso’s
Purr-Cedes Benz, “Briggs,” finished in Pittsburgh with his THIRD
Major!!! “Briggs” was expertly presented by Team Myers and is owned and
loved by Trish Becraft. “Briggs”
is “Ophelia’s” (CH
Calypso’s The Udder Woman) third Champion offspring which puts her
one point away from becoming an Outstanding
Dam for Terrie!
Dennis Williams and his gang from EagleRidge also
had a lot of rosettes in their camper after the Tampa and Orlando shows.
They had a great week. EagleRidge's Pot at the End of the
Rainbow, BISS, “Yukon,” finished his CH
with a 4 Point Major and BOB
over 6 specials at the Lakeland/WinterHaven show!!! Also, EagleRidge's
Mamma Cassie, “Cassie,” took the Major
Reserve at the same show!
EagleRidge's Rude Awakening,
“Pounce,” finished her CH
with a 4 Point Major on
Saturday, June 23, 2007 at the Central Florida KC Inc. show!!!
Also, the next star at EagleRidge, EagleRidge's
Gold Dust, “Dusty,” continues his winning ways. He remains
undefeated in the 6-9 month puppy class with some tough competition!!!
Dennis echoes everyone’s comments that it was a great week for Florida
owner handlers.
Kathy
Cudak also was beaming at this year’s Mid-FloridaGRC Specialty.
She was watching the Gemini Gang, CH
Gemini’s Lone Star Belle CD, MX, MXJ, BISS, “Dallas,” as well
as her get, CH Gemini’s Chants
To Xcel, BISS, “True,” who Kathy co-owns, and Gemini’s
X-Static, BISS, “Dylan.” Kathy
says as judging began in the Brood Bitch class, “Mama
Dallas” turned to her two sons “True”

Nancy
Greenbarg and Heidi Miller not only have good news to report from
Orlando, but also from the Northeast.
Nautilus Erin Go Bragh, JH, “Chelsea,” went
WB and BOS at the
Taconic Hills Show in Connecticut on Friday, June 8, 2007, which gave
her good friend, Heidi a fantastic birthday present!!! Nancy is “Chelsea’s”
proud owner.
Closer to home, in Orlando, “Chelsea’s” younger buddy, DeLa
Vega Colorado Rocky Mtn. Hi, “Rocky,” was picking up his share of rosettes too. “Rocky” took
Second in Puppy Dogs 6-9
Months under Col. Jon Chase at the Mid-FloridaGRC Specialty and then
moved up to the 9-12 Month class on Saturday, under Breeder/Judge Mimi
Mendia and took First!!! This
was a very special win because it was Heidi’s debut as a handler! They
also went on to win the class under Judge Dr. E. Trainer! “Rocky”
is owned and loved by Heidi and Nancy.
Also
causing excitement in Orlando was Toasty’s
Mandalay Bay, “Jack,” owned by Cathy Kollman and Pam Oxenberg.
“Jack” set his
sights high and brought home WD
and BOW on Sunday, June 24,
2007 at the Space Coast Kennel Club of Palm Bay Inc. Show for a 4
Point Major, his first!!!
Obedience
Cassidy’s
Baby CD, RA, MX, MXJ, AXP, AJP, NF, “Lucy,” and
her owner/handler, Judy Leitzsch, took First
Place in Wildcard Open at the Obedience Training Club of Palm Beach
County obedience trial!!! This was the very first time that “Lucy”
and Judy had entered Wildcard Open and Judy is very proud of “Lucy.”
There’s more training
ahead as “Lucy” continues
to focus on a CDX and devote
time to her first love, agility. “Lucy”
has been one very busy Golden Retriever.
She also has brags in the Agility and Rally
sections too!
Also
having a good time at the OTCPBC trials was U-CH Deauxquest Lord Of The
Dance, RN, “Bentley,” and his
owner/handler Deena Strauss. “Bentley” was entered in Wild Card Novice once each day and
earned a 193 ½ and a 194, which were good enough for a First Place and Second
Place finish!!! “Bentley’s”
owner Ted, Deena’s husband, was not only happy about these placements,
but he got a kick out of the lovely gift basket Deena won at the raffle
and the 4 tickets to the Miami Seaquarium!
Rally
Judy Leitzsch, Agility Training
Director of the Obedience Training Club of Palm County, had a great
weekend at her group’s Obedience and Rally trials.
At each of the three shows, Cassidy’s
Baby CD, RN, MX, MXJ, AXP, AJP, NF, “Lucy,” earned a leg towards
her RA title, completing this
accomplishment in style with scores of 96, 98 and a perfect 100!!! “Lucy’s”
perfect score was good enough for Third
Place, factoring in her time, in the very competitive Rally Advanced
B class. As always, “Lucy” was owner/handled by Judy. Don’t miss “Lucy’s”
other brags in the
Agility
and Obedience
sections!
U-CH/U-CD/ INT''L CH Crosscreek's Rumor Has
It CD, RAE2, CGC, “Rumor,” and his owner/handler,
Deena Strauss, earned two
Double
Q’s at
the OTCPBC trials as they continue their
journey towards an RAE3
title!!! “Rumor” also is owned and loved by
Deena’s husband Ted.
