Thanks
For The Jeffery Pepper Seminar
From
Hermine Scolnik, President of Everglades Golden Retriever Rescue, Inc.:
“I
want to thank you, Pam (Oxenberg),
for getting Jeff Pepper and this wonderful seminar organized. And
Pat (Andrews), thanks for
convincing me it wasn't just for breeders and conformation people.
I
was really hanging on his every word and I learned so much.
When I spoke to him, I told him that I was involved in rescue and
originally didn't think this was for me, but now I thought differently.
He said when you have a passion for the breed, you just can't learn
enough. And that is how I now feel. Although I will never be
a breeder and will probably never show a dog in conformation, I'll never
look at a dog in a show the same way after today. Now I know what
I am looking at -- not just a pretty dog -- but what the dog is supposed
to look like. Thanks again
to both of you.”
From Sally Anne Rowland,
Owner/Breeder/Handler & Mid-Florida Golden Retriever Club, Inc.
Newsletter Editor:
“The seminar was great and I thank both you (Pam Oxenberg) and Everglades GRC for taking the time to bring in
such a well respected breeder and judge of our breed to this area. I
learned a lot of new things and reconfirmed others in my mind as to my
goals and direction in the breed we all care for and respect. Thanks again and see
you soon.”
From
Patti Rogers, Past Hospitality Chair, EGRC Specialty:
“(This)
was a great seminar. . .besides the education I got, Jeff Pepper
is a very entertaining speaker. Glad
you (Pat Andrews) and Pam
planned it. Too bad we
didn’t have more turnout from our Club. . .It was their loss.
Thanks for encouraging me to come.”
From Susan Fulenwider,
Owner/Breeder/Handler, & Mid-FloridaGRC Vice President & Past
President, current President of Orange Blossom Owner Handlers
Association of Florida:
“Nice Seminar. . . I really enjoyed
it and learned a lot!!”

EGRR President Hermine Scolnik
Little Bear,
our 9 year old boy with malignant melanoma, is a TV celebrity!
Last month I reported that he was the perfect candidate for the
new vaccine to treat this horrible disease, but that the cost of the
vaccine might prevent him from receiving this treatment. Stacey, who is in charge of publicity and grant writing,
convinced News 12 to broadcast his story.
Little Bear, his
foster parents, and I appeared on both News 12 and the local Fox News to
tell his story. Donations
started pouring in! In
addition, Dr. Correa, his oncologist, gave us a “rescue discount”,
so we have enough money to pay for all of his treatment as well as the
booster shots he will need in the future.
Any money left over will be placed in a special fund to be used
only by Little Bear or any other Golden coming to us with treatable
cancer. To date Little Bear has had his first two shots and is on the way to being
disease free. He is now
away on vacation with his foster-to-adopt parents, who will finalize his
adoption once his initial four treatments are completed.
Unfortunately, we do not have such good news about our
puppies. Amber/Casey, Jorja/Shasta,
and Marlee have all been
diagnosed with Juvenile Renal Dysplasia (JRD), and are not expected to
reach their first birthdays. All
the testing has been completed; Lymes disease and leptospirosis have
been eliminated as possible causes of the problem.
Fortunately, Flappy/Brandy
and Sandy/Thud, the
parents of the litter, are completely healthy.
Dr. Butzer believes that this was a genetic problem, probably
sex-linked, as the three boys do not have any signs of this disease
either. Our hearts are breaking for these poor little girls and their
wonderful families
Since my last report Gracie,
Maggie, Morgan, Ginger, Max and Jerry/Joey
have been happily adopted. Buddy
is just waiting for his “forever” family to come back from
vacation, to sign the papers and take him home. Pampero
and Cuervo are in
foster-to-adopt homes, and will probably be adopted by the time you read
this. Our dogs waiting for
their “forever” homes run the gamut of ages from 9 months to 9
years, with everything in between.
Murdock, Pudder, Dolphin/Dalton, and Becky are fortunate enough to be in loving foster homes, while Pebbles,
Sasha, Logan, and Simba are being boarded at vets’ offices.
Teddy and Sammy
are also at different vets because they are recovering from whatever it
is they caught at the Shelter. Teddy has suspected canine flu, and is the first resident of Dr.
Butzer’s new isolation ward. Sadly,
Captain, an old boy who was
living at the Last Chance Ranch, was helped on his journey to the
Bridge, when walking and breathing became just too difficult for him.
Allan Babcock Dog and Cat Rescue
put us in touch with a new vet in Broward County, who has been able to
help us with the shelter dogs. Dr.
Darko has treated and boarded two of our dogs.
He also recommended another vet in his area, who has agreed to
care for a shelter dog too. Because
of their help, and Dr. Butzer’s “isolation ward”, we were able to
pull 5 dogs from the shelters, which otherwise would have been put to
sleep, and these Goldens received excellent care at this special unit.
However, one Golden, Dolphin/Dalton,
who did come to us with suspected Cushings Disease, turned out to
only have severe allergies and some other assorted other problems. He is
now on the road to recovery, due to the wonderful care he has received
from his new foster dad.
Adoption applications, had slowed down just prior to July 4th,
but have picked up again. Of
course so have the number of dogs coming to us.
I hope that the applicants will match up with the dogs, and we
will have some more happy adoptions to report next month.
EGRC Members & Their Pets Now Eligible For Free Discount
Prescription Drug Program
Broward County is offering free prescription drug discount
cards that can be used by any County resident, regardless of age,
income, or existing health coverage, at any participating retail
pharmacy. This program,
available through a sponsorship from the National Association of
Counties (NACO) is not only available to EGRC members, but is also
extended to their Golden Retrievers, and includes pet prescriptions!
Individuals who do not live in Broward County, but conduct business in
the County, such as by working in the area, may also pick up a discount
card.
There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no
limitations on use. The
drug discount cards can be picked up at many of the Broward County
facilities, including the different parks’ offices, the libraries and
the downtown Government Center, to name just a few.
The average discount is 20%.
The cardholder pays either the discount, or the pharmacy’s
retail price, whichever is lower. It might be worth checking this out,
next time your vet writes a script for your Golden’s medication!
Remember, this applies to human medication that can be given to dogs and
cats—not strictly pet medication.
To learn more about the program, please visit the Broward
County Human Services at: http://www.broward.org/humanservices/naco_prescription.htm.
To find out if your local pharmacy is a participating
pharmacy, visit this link at https://naco.advancerx.com
and then click on the tab to the left that says “Locate A Pharmacy.”
You will be directed to a series of links to enter your zip code and
city and a list of participating pharmacies in a 5 mile radius of your
zip code will appear. A
search in the Weston area showed that Publix, CVS and Walgreens
participated, in addition to several independent pharmacies.
Broward
County call center's number for any general questions about the program
is (954) 831-4000. For more specific questions, EGRC members can call
CareMark, the company administering the discount program at
1-877-321-2652.
Make sure you identify yourself as a NACO card holder from Broward
County.
Thanks to
the great heads up by EGRC member Ellen Lindenfeld, a manager for one of
the Broward libraries, for bringing this program to our attention! Ellen
also says that Target and Walmart have discount pharmacy programs that
you might want to investigate.
Purina Parent Club

THE DATE! APRIL 4-6, 2008 FOR CANINE HEALTH SYMPOSIUM
The Golden Retriever Foundation (GRF), a research, rescue
and educational funding organization which is affiliated with the GRCA,
is planning a comprehensive HEALTH
SYMPOSIUM, to be held in the Northern Colorado area on the weekend
of April 4-6, 2008.
The symposium will focus on improving the health and wellness of
purebred dogs through education and exchange of information. GRF is
sponsoring this event in celebration of its tenth anniversary, as a way
of acknowledging the contributions of its generous donors and also to
promote, support and encourage collaborative animal cancer and health
research.
The GRF Health symposium will bring together canine health
professionals, purebred dog fanciers and breeders along with dog lovers
of all interests (conformation, agility, field, herding, obedience,
tracking etc…). GRF is following the precedent set in previous
successful symposiums held in 2004 and 2005 in Northern Colorado which
brought these groups together in a collaborative, educational and
supportive atmosphere.
The symposium will have classes, sessions and lectures
focusing on canine health and medicine, husbandry, breeding practices,
nutrition and exercise, including traditional and alternative
disciplines that support the well being and performance of purebred
dogs.
Dog fanciers, clubs and organizations are also invited to
participate in planning and attending this event. Past sponsors of the
health symposium have included Buckhorn Valley KC, (BVKC) Mile- Hi
Golden Retriever Club, Roaring Fork KC and Colorado Kennel Club. The GRF
wishes to acknowledge BVKC as our Friday evening welcome-party hosts at
this event! Come join the fun!

Letter to Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner
From the Editor: The following letter was sent to
Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner, by Ronald Menaker, Chairman of the
Board of the AKC and Dennis P. Sprung, AKC President and Chief Executive
Officer, regarding the recent indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback
Michael Vick for alleged involvement in dog fighting operations.
“To
Our Constituency:
Dennis
Sprung and I have sent the following letter to the NFL Commissioner and
therefore we certainly think that direct communication to the
Commissioner is appropriate.
Ron Menaker
July
20, 2007
Roger
Goodell
Commissioner,
National Football League
280
Park Avenue
New
York, NY 10017
Dear
Commissioner Goodell:
As
the Board Chairman and President & CEO of a 123-year-old
sport-governing body, we are very much aware of the conflicting
pressures you face in the matter of the Michael Vick indictment.
Michael Vick is not only a nationally known superstar, but he is
also the face of the National Football League’s Atlanta franchise.
The Atlanta Falcons will not take any unilateral action on the matter
because of the negative impact both in their financial liability and
their on-field performance. The buck thus stops with you as NFL
Commissioner.
It
is easy to take the position that you will just let the legal process
play out, and that he is innocent until proven guilty, which is what the
NFL and the Falcons, as well as the players association, have done to
date. However, the nature of the crimes described in detail in the
indictment in this case are so heinous and repulsive that they should be
strongly condemned by any civilized person. This activity is
anathema to everything the American Kennel Club stands for, and the
millions of AKC registrants and competitors, many of whom have been NFL
fans, unilaterally condemn it and those who perpetrated it.
It
is common for state laws to recommend the immediate suspension of a
teacher when charged with certain crimes. To acknowledge the
severity of Mr. Vick’s charges, we urge his immediate suspension.”
Respectfully,
Ronald
H. Menaker
Dennis B. Sprung
Chairman
of the Board
President and Chief Executive Officer
AKC’s Position On Dog Fighting
In
response to the federal Indictment of Atlanta Falcons Quarterback
Michael Vick and three other men alleging that they have sponsored dog
fighting, the AKC has issued the following statement:
“The American Kennel Club is a not-for-profit organization which
maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world and
oversees the sport of purebred dogs in the United States. The AKC
supports state laws making any form of participation in organized dog
fights a felony. The AKC unequivocally opposes the 'sport' of dog
fighting and the breeding and/or training of dogs for fighting. The AKC
opposes the training of dogs for uncontrolled aggressive behavior toward
other dogs and people.
Dog
fighting is barbaric. We hope that both federal and NFL authorities will
take these charges very seriously," said AKC Chairman Ron Menaker.
"The AKC supports legislation to criminalize dog fighting,
including traveling across interstate lines to aid in unlawful
activities relating to dog fighting, and any other form of animal
cruelty. On behalf of our 5,000 affiliated clubs made up of dog lovers,
we will be monitoring this case very closely as it proceeds through the
judicial system."
Editor’s
Epilogue: Mr. Vick has been barred from training camp while the NFL
conducts its own investigation related to federal charges that concern
dog fighting, according to several press reports.
Mr. Vick has had an impressive record in the NFL since being
chosen by the Falcons as the number one overall draft pick in 2001.
Last year, he became the first quarterback to rush for 1,000
yards in a single season. He
could face a four-game suspension, or even higher penalties under the
NFL’s new player conduct policy, depending on the decision of his
employer. More seriously,
if convicted, he may be looking at a prison sentence that could be as
long as 6 years. He has pled not guilty. His contract with shoe
manufacturer Nike has been suspended without pay while the investigation
continues.
