EGRC August 2007 Minutes
August
16, 2007
The
meeting was held at the home of Paula and Gus Fistel on August 16, 2007
and was called to order at 7:58 pm.
Members
in attendance were: Hermine Scolnik, Marlene Goldman, Pat Andrews, Ellen
Bloome, Paula Fistel, Pat Kopco, Jill Berk, Patti Rodgers, Michelle
Panetta, Deena Strauss, Diane Davis, Judy and Bernie Gilick, Jean
Fulton, Chris Spillane, Kara
Clark, Heidi Miller, and Nancy Greenbarg.
President’s Report:
There were no minutes at
the last meeting/function in July. The Club had a dinner and a movie night.
Motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the last
meeting, which was May 17, 2007 as published in the June newsletter.
Additional reports from EGRC President
Pat Andrews: Due to the Board
not having an updated membership list, an error was made and those whose
memberships had expired were still receiving emails. There is one
long-time member whose membership had expired; the Board has voted to
make an exception and have this member reinstated. Her application will
be read tonight. This applicant will be an associate member until she
has fulfilled the requirements of new membership.
Paula
Fistel has volunteered to be the Show Chair, Obedience and Rally Chair
for our Specialty. We now have a Rally/Obedience Coordinator position
available. Pat will make certain with Mike LaValle that we are able to
do this. We still need a Chief Table Steward for obedience.
James
Conroy, the Specialty Coordinator for PBCDFA, (Palm Beach County Dog
Fanciers Association, Inc.) had requested us to allow the Doxies to hold
an OB and Rally trial specific to their breed. After speaking with Mike
LaValle, the Board has decided it would not be a good business decision
to allow this. The Lab club is holding its Specialty on the same date at
the same venue. It wishes to sponsor a trophy for OB and Rally for
“Highest Scoring Lab.” This option was offered to the doxie club and
to the other breeds who would have requested a breed trial.
Pat
Andrews has made changes:
Michelle
Panetta has been helpful to The Club by taking on the Secretary
position, since being elected to Treasurer in January; this was
something that she had not originally planned on doing, and it has
proved to be an overwhelming amount of work, considering her other
obligations to several organizations. Pat is appointing her assistant,
Ellen Bloome, to be the Secretary for the remainder of the term, which
will expire at the end of December.
The
statistician position is now discontinued due to lack of interest on the
part of the membership in emailing their updates to be maintained as
part of The Club’s records.
The
GRCA delegate is now Pat Andrews.
Puppy
referral will now be Marlene Goldman and Judy Gilick, so EGRC will have
a representative in Palm Beach and Broward Counties and Marlene and Judy
will work to divide Dade County.
Webmaster
Sue King is to email the membership about the password protected
information on the website; if access is needed she is to be contacted
how to access this information.
As
a reminder to the membership, the Nominating Committee is comprised of
Chair Deena Strauss, and members Kara Clark, and Hermine Scolnik. Alternates
are Judy Gilick and Barbie Keough.
The Bylaws state that the Nominating Committee is appointed by
the Board at the August meeting so President Andrews mentioned the
appointment of the Nominating Committee again so that there is no
misunderstanding as to its creation.
Proactively, the Board began contacting individuals and
confirming committee assignments earlier this year, to give the
committee extra time to review candidates for a slate, and the names of
the committee members were announced at the Thursday, April 19, 2007
General/Board Meeting. Two
board positions and four officer positions are open; please contact the
committee if you wish to be nominated.
VP Report:
Kara
reports that Tail’s End has not returned her calls regarding the
rescheduled Grooming Seminar. The date is Saturday or Sunday, the 13th
or 14th of October. Ellen Bloome has volunteered to call Family Dog
Central to see if they are willing to let us use their site.
The
September meeting Date is the 27th at the home of Pat and
Gary Andrews at 7 pm.
Secretary’s Report:
Michelle
has received samples of Nature’s Recipe, a new food. Samples available
are 24 bags to a case; and 3 cases are available.
Michelle has requested these on behalf of EGRC.
These samples will be used as some of the prizes at our October
meeting, the 6th of October, at Quiet Waters Park. It will be a Fun
Day at the Park. EGRC will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs. A
list will be available on the website to sign up for which food each
member volunteers to bring. A head count is needed for the hamburger and
hotdog amounts. This meeting is for the dogs!
An
updated membership list was sent to Sue King. Pat also sent the list to
the Board.
There
was a special membership reading for Jean Fulton; she was unanimously
reinstated.
It
was noted that membership applications should have the sponsor’s
signature.
Treasurer’s Report:
This was read by Michelle Panetta and given for the months of June, July
and August but will not appear in the on-line newsletter until it is
password protected in accordance with the Board’s request.
Net change between June and August was a reduction of
approximately $240.
Committee Reports:
Sunshine:
Cards sent out to Ellen Lindenfeld, Cathy Kollman, Patti Dunham, Skip
and Sandy Dunham, Peter Clark, and Diane Davis.
The
Board meeting on September 6th at Pat Andrews’ home is to discuss the
revised point schedules for the end of year trophies.
Perpetual
Trophies need to be back for engraving by November 1st. Heidi Miller has
volunteered to bring and pick up the trophies from Ft. Lauderdale. It is
now up to the Club members to get their trophies to Heidi by 11/1/2007.
Michelle needs to have the information for the trophies by
November 1st also.
Unfinished
Business: Nancy Greenbarg no longer wishes to coordinate and organize a
hunting seminar at this time.
New
Business: Ellen Bloome is working with the American Red Cross to
coordinate a pet CPR class as a Club fundraiser this fall. Details will
be available by September’s meeting.
Respectfully
submitted by:
Ellen

Editor’s
Note: The following are the new guidelines approved by the Golden
Retriever Club of America, Inc. (GRCA), which is EGRC’s parent club.
It is a GRCA requirement that these guidelines be followed by any
club hosting either a Regional or National Specialty.
Although following these guidelines are optional for those clubs
hosting Independent Specialties, EGRC’s Show Committee has
historically chosen to adhere to the GRCA’s regulations, with the
exception of the Veterans Classes, allowing Goldens as young as 7 years
to enter.
The
mission of the GRCA Sweepstakes is to provide a competition where
breeders and owners can showcase their puppies and veterans. It was
established to encourage owner/handlers to show their own dogs and to
share the results of their breeding program, the potential of their
young dogs and the longevity and structural soundness of their veterans
with other breeders and exhibitors.
The
following guidelines are mandatory for Sweepstakes held at GRCA National
and Regional Specialties and are strongly recommended for local member
club specialties.
TIME:
Sweepstakes should be held so as not to conflict with the judging of the
regular classes. This can be done by scheduling Sweepstakes for early
morning before the regular classes begin, or the previous evening if
suitable arrangements can be made and adequate time is available.
JUDGE:
It is recommended that, as a first consideration, the judge be a
qualified breeder of retrievers with at least 10 years experience in
their breed and have attended at least two obedience trials and two
field events with water tests. If such a person is not available, a
qualified breeder of sporting dogs or a person working toward AKC
approval in the sporting breeds may be invited to judge. All sweepstakes
judges must be given a copy of the sweepstakes rules prior to their
assignment, preferably with their contract.
PREMIUM LIST INFORMATION:
Detailed information for the premium list is included on the
accompanying page in a form which needs only minor editing to be ready
for submission to a superintendent or show secretary.
1.
Clubs are given the option of offering ribbons or rosettes for
individual class placements.
2.
Add any trophies offered after the Ribbon/Rosette information.
ALTERNATIVES TO HOLDING SWEEPSTAKES:
The holding of a Sweepstakes is optional to the host club. If the host
club chooses not to offer a Sweepstakes, then it is recommended that,
after the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch have been selected and before
the Best of Breed Class begins, the winners of the Puppy Dog and Puppy
Bitch classes (6-9 months and 9-12 months) be brought into the ring.
From these four exhibits the awards of Best Puppy and Best of Opposite
Sex to Best Puppy shall be made by the person scheduled to judge the
Best of Breed class. The winners of the 12-18 Month classes are not
eligible for this award as they are not puppies by AKC definition. Dark
green rosettes shall be awarded to the Best Puppy and Best of Opposite
Sex to Best Puppy. There shall be no prize money and the awarding of
trophies is optional. The information and awards shall be included in
the Premium List.
PREMIUM LIST INFORMATION:
ALL SWEEPSTAKES CLASSES
INCLUDING VETERANS AND BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES
HANDLER:
The handler of a Sweepstakes exhibit must be either the owner, co-owner,
breeder or member of their immediate family as they are listed on file
with the American Kennel Club as of the closing date for the show for
which the Sweepstakes entry is being made. Immediate family is defined
as husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter or
legal domestic partner. Step children and legal wards are also included
in this definition. In-laws and grandchildren are not considered to be
immediate family members. No other individual may take the entry into
the ring during judging or check-in.
The
following individuals are excluded from showing an exhibit in
sweepstakes unless they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or
co-own the entry with a member of their immediate family (as defined
above) or a legal domestic partner:
Any
individual listed as an agent on any dog in any regular or non-regular
class.
Any
individual with an Agent number including, but not limited to an AKC
Registered Handler Number or Professional Handlers Association (PHA)
number.
To
avoid confusion or question, it is recommended that a photocopy of the
registration certificate be included with the entry for a co-owned
exhibit.
Disabled
or physically challenged handlers are encouraged to show their own dogs
and every effort will be made to accommodate them. Some things which
might be done to assist them are: making sure the ring gate opening is
wide enough for a wheel chair; making sure the surface is as level and
smooth as possible; placing slower handlers at the end of the line or
having them gait their dogs together; allowing someone else to push an
exhibitor's wheelchair, providing they do not handle the dog; making
sure stewards and judges face a handler who is hearing impaired when
speaking to them; permitting the use of crutches or canes.
Best in Sweepstakes Classes.
It is required that the same person who showed the dog to a first place
in a Sweepstakes class will also show the dog in the Best in Sweeps
class. However, if that person should have more than one dog in the Best
in Sweepstakes class, someone else is permitted to show the additional
winner. That person should meet the handler definitions above. Only in
cases where there is not another owner, co-owner, breeder, co-breeder or
immediate family member available, should another person take the dog
into the Best in Sweeps class. It is understood that there would be no
financial benefit to that individual. Individuals who have an AKC
Handler number, a PHA number or are listed as agent on any dog in the
regular or non-regular classes may not show a sweepstakes entrant unless
they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or co-own the entry with
a member of their immediate family (as defined above) or a legal
domestic partner.

Special
Announcement Regarding Imported Golden Retrievers
EGRC
member/breeders who import Golden Retrievers from Canada, England and
other foreign countries need to be aware that the Federal Government is
considering several key revisions regarding the importation of dogs and
cats into the United States. These
proposals would also affect those EGRC members who purchase Golden
Retrievers directly from foreign breeders.
The
Department of Health and Human Services/Center for Disease Control
(HHS/CDC) feels the existing law puts public health at risk.
The six key considerations are outlined below, and EGRC members can
let the HHS/CDC know their thoughts on the matter by copying and pasting
the following link, which goes directly to the HHS/CDC website:
http://tinyurl.com/ywrwy9.
The deadline to email the HHS/CDC is October
1, 2007.
These
are the issues:
1. Should
HHS/CDC establish a minimum age for the importation of dogs, cats, and
ferrets into the United States? If so, at what age and why? Should
the minimum age differ for cats, dogs, and ferrets? Should HHS/CDC
establish a requirement for the estimation of age by a licensed
veterinarian?
2. Should rabies vaccination be a requirement for entry into the
United States for all dogs, cats, and ferrets? What documentation would
suffice as proof of vaccination? Should HHS/CDC require serologic
evidence of immunity? What timeframe of vaccination would be
appropriate? Should dogs, cats, and ferrets imported for research
purposes be considered exempt from rabies vaccination requirements if
vaccination would interfere with the intended research?
3. Should HHS/CDC require each dog, cat, and ferret to have a
valid international health certificate signed by a veterinary authority
in the country of origin as a condition for entry into the United
States? Are there particular international health certificates that
should be used as a model? Would such a requirement be financially
feasible for the importer? What diseases should a health examination and
issuance of a health certificate cover? What are the perceived benefits
or shortcomings of health certificates with respect to accurately
reflecting a dog, cat, or ferret’s true health status? How can these
certificates be made difficult to falsify? Are there other methods that
can demonstrate the health of the animal?
4. Would a requirement for all dogs, cats, and ferrets imported
into the United States to have a unique identifier, such as a tattoo or
microchip, as endorsed by the American Veterinary Medical Association,
reduce the likelihood of fraudulent vaccination claims and health
certificates? Would identifiers unique to each animal assist officials
in locating and tracking dogs, cats, and ferrets during public-health
investigations? How might the uniqueness of identifiers be assured if
they are administered in other countries? What are some possible
difficulties associated with requiring a unique identifier for each dog,
cat, or ferret? Who would read the identifier? Should a database of
identifiers for imported dogs, cats, and ferrets be maintained, and if
so, who would maintain it? What is the impact of the cost of
identification measures? Are there alternative identification methods?
5. To facilitate the implementation of these regulations, should
HHS/CDC restrict the importation of dogs, cats, and ferrets to only
those ports of entry staffed by HHS/CDC personnel? These quarantine
stations are located in Atlanta, GA; Miami, FL; Chicago, IL; New York
City, NY; Honolulu, HI; San Francisco, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA;
Newark, NJ; Washington, DC; Dallas, TX; El Paso, TX; Houston, TX;
Anchorage, AK; Boston, MA; Detroit, MI; Minneapolis, MN; San Diego, CA;
Philadelphia, PA; and San Juan, PR. What impact would limiting the
importation of dogs, cats, and ferrets to certain ports potentially have
on pet owners and the pet industry?
6. Many countries allow dogs, cats, and ferrets with appropriate
documentation and vaccination history to accompany travelers. Is there a
need for possible exemptions to importation requirements for dogs, cats,
and ferrets that are traveling with their owners abroad and returning to
the United States? Is there a need for other types of exemptions for
dogs, cats, and ferrets? Should HHS/CDC consider additional requirements
that might reduce the risk of importing communicable diseases from dogs,
cats, and ferrets into the United States, and make the implementation of
these regulations more feasible and effective at ports of entry?

AKC
Statement On Michael Vick Guilty Plea In Dog Fighting Case
In
response to reports. . .that Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick
has reached a deal with prosecutors and will plead guilty to crimes
associated with dog fighting, the American Kennel Club® has issued the
following statement from AKC's Chairman of the Board, Ron Menaker:
"While we are pleased to hear that the Vick
case is being settled through the criminal justice system, we remain
concerned that the punishment will be inadequate considering the heinous
nature of the crimes. Furthermore, we hope that the National Football
League will continue its own investigation into claims that dog fighting
is commonplace among players. The League has an opportunity—and a
moral obligation—to investigate and punish other NFL players who may
have knowledge of, or who may be involved in, these atrocious acts of
animal cruelty. The AKC constituency, NFL fans, and the dog-loving
American public will be watching closely.
This
story is distressing and brings up intense emotions in all of us, yet
there is a potential 'silver lining.' It is creating a national dialogue
about dog fighting, illegal in all 50 states and a felony in 48, yet
often at the bottom of the priority list in terms of crimes that
authorities investigate and pursue. Hopefully the Vick case will serve
as a beacon and bring more forces to bear on preventing and prosecuting
this behavior.
Another
issue which this case brings to light is breed-specific legislation. As
municipalities around the country seek to address the issue of dangerous
dogs, they often turn to this type of narrow and misguided legislation
which bans the ownership of certain breeds. AKC, along with many other
respected animal welfare organizations, has been beating the drum for
many years about the inefficacy of this type of legislation. As
demonstrated in the Vick case, those perpetuating these crimes are not
your average law-abiding pet owners. They use dogs as menacing weapons,
as entertainment in a blood sport, and as a prop to sustain their
"bad boy" image. Breed-specific legislation spreads the
dangerous misconception that the dogs are at fault. The reality is that
they are the victims, manipulated by 'owners' to fulfill malicious
purposes.
On behalf of all dog lovers, I urge both law enforcement authorities and
law makers to recognize the many lessons that can be learned from this
tragic case."
Editor’s
Postscript: It has been widely reported that the Atlanta Falcons will
attempt to “assert any claims or remedies” from Mr. Vick in an
attempt to recover $22 million of what was a 10-year, $130 million
contract he signed back in 2004. Nike,
maker of popular tennis shoes, has also suspended the release of the
Vick V Shoe, which was scheduled to be on store shelves August 23, 2007.
Nike also has suspended its contract with Mr. Vick. Reebok, the
official uniform supplier of the NFL, has said it will stop selling Mr.
Vick’s replica Falcon #7 jersey at its retail stores and on its
website.
AKC
Takes Initial Step Toward Formation of Political Action Committee-
Requests Advisory Opinion From FEC on Status of Member and Affiliated
Clubs
On
Friday, August 10, 2007 a request was filed with the General Counsel of
the Federal Election Commission (FEC) seeking an opinion on whether the
American Kennel Club® and its member and affiliate dog clubs are
"membership organizations" as defined under relevant FEC
regulations, and whether the AKC® and its member and affiliated clubs
are "affiliated" within the meaning of applicable FEC
regulations. The request was filed by attorney Timothy W. Jenkins of
O'Connor & Hannan LLP of Washington, DC on behalf of the AKC.
"Last
week's filing with the FEC is the first and arguably most significant
step toward giving the AKC and the dog fancy a crucial tool for
positively affecting dog legislation at the federal and state
level," said Ron Menaker, AKC's Chairman of the Board. Menaker
informed the fancy of the AKC's intentions to form a PAC during the June
2007 Delegate meeting.
The
FEC opinion will determine the scope of the universe of individuals that
the AKC can legally solicit for contributions to its PAC. In emphasizing
the importance of careful and deliberate steps toward formation of a PAC
representing purebred dog fanciers, Menaker noted that the AKC has
carefully considered this action for nearly a year, stating "many
people think that all an organization has to do to form a PAC is to
start soliciting money. In fact, the process can be very complicated,
particularly given the unusual membership structure of the AKC and its
member and affiliated clubs. It is essential that we proceed in a
deliberate and legal manner."
AKC
President Dennis B. Sprung called the filing of the FEC request a
"watershed event in the history of the AKC. We have been very
aggressive in advocating for the rights and interests of purebred dog
owners and breeders through our Canine Legislation Department, our
federal legislative consultant, our state federations of dog clubs, and
our individual member and licensed clubs, but without a PAC, the dog
fancy has been fighting with one hand tied behind their backs. A PAC
will enable us to be infinitely more effective in representing our
interests."
Sprung
added that he was optimistic that a prompt and favorable response would
be forthcoming from the FEC, and that an AKC PAC could be formally
launched before the end of the year.

Seeks Member Input On Field Education And Events In On-Line Survey
|
|
The
Field Education Sub-Committee of the GRCA is conducting a brief
survey of GRCA members to find out what field events and
educational opportunities are of interest to them, and also to see
what member clubs are doing in the way of field work.
The purpose of the Field Education Subcommittee shall be to
enhance all members' appreciation of the breed's purpose as
primarily a hunting dog, to inspire them to participate in field
events with their dogs, and to educate those interested in
beginning or advancing their field training knowledge and
experience. This
survey will help the GRCA set goals in helping the membership with
its educational objectives. To

under Judge Alston. Going WB/BOS
from the 9-12 Puppy Class was Calypso's
Booty Call From Pekay,
“Hootchie,” handled by co-owner Sally Anne Rowland!!! “Hootchie”
also is owned and loved by EGRC member Terrie Pennington.
West
Palm Beach was the site of a win by another EGRC up-and-coming youngster
back in July. De
La Vega Colorado Rocky Mnt Hi, “Rocky,” took RWD on July 14, 2007
from the 9-12 Puppy Class!!!
His mommies Nancy Greenbarg and Heidi Miller are very proud of
him and sent a photo of “Rocky” showing off his winning form with his breeder and
handler, Jane Myers, that day!

EGRC
also was represented by the ol’ dogs in West Palm Beach.
Since winning was a family affair in Veteran’s, Toasty’s
Alligator Alley, RN, CGC, “Alli,” and
her first cousin and roommate, Toasty’s
North Lake Jake, RN, CGC, “Jake,” had their photos taken at the
same time when “Alli”
took BOB Veteran and “Jake”
won the Veterans Dog Class.
Owners David and Linda Rappaport are glad to have a photo of
such a happy memory! “Jake”
also has a second brag, in the Miscellaneous
section so make sure you don’t miss it.

EGRC’s
version of “Brad Pitt,” Mischief
Magik Irish Cream, MX, AXJ, CGC, “Bailey,” landed another
modeling gig. “Bailey”
has been making commercials for LTD Commodities, makers of various pet
products, including a “Pet Jet” and pet party supplies.
Proud owner Kathy Cudak was able to go on the set and snap a
personal photo of her handsome boy in action to share with us!

North Lake Jake, RN, CGC, “Jake,” took 6th Place in the July Photo Contest sponsored by
“Pampered Puppy,” an on-line magazine featuring unique items for
dogs and their owners. The editors awarded prizes to the top 10 photos
and out of 1300 entries, “Jake’s” photo made the final cut! “Jake’s” owner, David Rappaport, enjoys his photography
hobby, and caught “Jake”
in one of his special poolside high dives, with cousin Toasty’s
Alligator Alley, RN, CGC, “Alli,” watching on the sidelines,
trying not to look too impressed. “Jake’s”
not doing too bad for an ol’ boy, considering he’s approaching 11.
Here’s the winning photo! “Jake”
also has a brag in the Breed
section this month.

“Jake’s”
photo was 6th out of
1300 entries in the Pampered Puppy July Dog Photo Contest.
“Jake’s”
owner, Dave Rappaport, took this prize-winning shot.
The spoils? A leather collar from “Urban Hund!”
“Jake” is
also owned & loved by Dave’s wife Linda. |
Dave
also had a chance to practice his photography skills on two other
Goldens this past month. Dave, “Jake,”
“Alli,” and Linda
played host recently to Mischief
Magik Tequila Sunrise, “Sunny” and Toasty’s
Guys And Dolls, “Sky,” owned and loved by Linda and Andy Share.
One of the advantages of staying at the “Hotel Rapp” is
the 24-hour pool and a chance to have your portrait taken by the
in-house photographer! Six-year-old “Sunny”
quickly became “Jake’s”
swimming buddy while 10-month-old “Sky”
hooked up with ol’ flirt “Alli”
and ran figure 8’s on
the back lawn. All four dogs
were hams in front of the camera.
Linda and Andy enjoyed
the photos that Dave took and are hoping he comes through with a CD. As for now, they’ve requested that a couple of the photos
be published in the newsletter so everyone can see their handsome boys.
