EGRC
RECEIVES COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FROM AKC!!!
EGRC
was one of quarterly honorees of the American Kennel Club’s Community
Achievement Award, as part of its public education efforts.
The program continues this year, with EGRC President Pat Andrews,
along with her Golden Retriever, Toasty’s Perfect Pitch CD, RN, CGC “AJ,” having just
completed their quarterly visit to Stranahan High School. They, along with Amberwood’s
Celtic Gold Fiona CD, RAE, CGC, TDI, "Fiona" and Toasty’s
Celticgold She’s The One, “Bru,” both owned by Vice President
Kara Clark, gave another well-received presentation to 50 medical magnet
science students on September 10, 2007.
The
presentations have been so well-received that the school administration
has asked that they be expanded to include another class—the
Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program.
As of press time, a date is being worked out with the school, and
this presentation will be scheduled on an annual basis.
At
the request of the EGRC President, the letter submitted to the AKC by
AKC Public Education Coordinator Linda Rappaport is being published in
the newsletter so that the membership can read and enjoy its contents.
Congratulations to the membership, and a big thank you to Pat, Kara,
Linda, Hermine Scolnik and also Hermine’s Good
Gollie Miz Mollie, CGC, TDI, “Mollie,” for being a part of the
program!
Community
Achievement Nomination For The Everglades Golden Retriever Club, Inc.
I
am nominating the Everglades Golden Retriever Club, Inc. (EGRC) for a
community achievement award for the 2nd quarter of 2007 for
its exceptional efforts in community outreach in public education in
South Florida. Our club
gave presentations to approximately 415
students this past school year (May, 2006-May, 2007).
On FIVE different
occasions we visited THREE
different schools, in TWO of
the three counties representing our geographic area, speaking to
students in pre-k through 5th
grade, and 9th
through 12th grade.
With
the push towards pet limits, breeder licensing, breed specific bans,
mandatory neuter and other excessive laws that impinge on pet ownership,
it is so important to reach young hearts and minds, and make a good
impression, and EGRC has developed, in the past year, a well-received
public education program. For
the 2006-2007 school year, EGRC has:
1)
As part of its
Responsible Dog Ownership Day activities, on September 12, 2006,
discussed how responsible dog owners and future vets can better work
together so that dogs are not only happier, but healthier.
Breeding, health, behavior and other issues were presented to
approximately 50 students enrolled in a Pre-Med/Medical Sciences Magnet Program
at Stranahan High School in
Fort Lauderdale, FL. The
names of the EGRC members who gave the presentation were EGRC President
Pat Andrews with her Golden Retriever “AJ” and EGRC Vice President
Kara Clark with her Golden Retriever “Fiona.”
This event was coordinated by AKC Public Education Coordinator
Linda Rappaport.
It was so well received that we were asked to become a permanent
part of the program curriculum.
2)
On January 23, 2007
Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. Clark delivered the same presentation to another
class of pre-med students at Stranahan
High School. Approximately 50
students not only heard about health and care regarding canines, but
also about the importance of obedience, as both “AJ” and “Fiona”
demonstrated in their routines.
3)
On February 1, 2007,
one of our members, Hermine Scolnik, and her Golden Retriever,
“Mollie,” discussed Responsible Dog Ownership with approximately 15
students in the after-school Pet Club at Diamond
View Elementary in Greenacres, FL.
Hermine also spoke about the importance of rescue to these 3rd,
4th and 5th graders, many of whom desire some type
of career working with animals. Her
presentation was so well received that she has been asked to return on
an annual basis.
4)
On May 1, 2007, Mrs.
Andrews and Mrs. Clark visited approximately 50
9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders at Stranahan High School to discuss canine pet care, breeding
considerations, responsible ownership and conduct an obedience
demonstration with their Golden Retrievers, “AJ” and “Fiona.”
5)
On May 8, 2007, Mrs.
Andrews, Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Rappaport participated in a Career Day at Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary School in Lauderhill, FL, along
with Golden Retrievers “AJ” and “Fiona.”
The students learned what types of careers were available in the
world of dogs: veterinarian, AKC judge, obedience trainer, groomer, pet
sitter, etc. The students
also were taught some lessons on safety around dogs, and “AJ” and
“Fiona” demonstrated obedience to the students.
During the half-day session, approximately 250
students, from approximately 8 different classes, representing grades
pre-k through grade 4, attended. Attached are copies of letters received
from some of the students.
It
is my wish that the AKC gives this application serious consideration.
EGRC would find the $1000 award to be very useful in terms of
offsetting the costs of copying and printing some of the materials that
go into making up the packets for the students.
Some of our members are donating the costs, but we need
assistance with our public education budget, and this money would be put
to good use.
Enclosed
are photos of the various events, with the application, as instructed.
If
you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at
954-389-8822.
Sincerely,
Linda
Rappaport

Letters From Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary School Students
(Thank you) AJ for coming to our school
and teaching us about dog safety and how to care for dogs and how to
groom them. So have you won
any dog shows? How do you teach AJ all them things and he listen so
well. . .I wish you and AJ can come to our school again. Davante
Your dogs are amazing. I like both of
them. . .the impact that you have on me is that I like animals and when
I grow up I want to be a scientist or a zoo keeper. It would be lots of fun if I had a dog. Kemani
Thank you for telling students about
what to do if a dog comes up and if it’s friendly or not friendly.
. .and I will not let go of the important things you told me so
when I get caught up in a bad situation with a dog that’s tail is low
between their legs I will always remember to stand like a tree. Roberto

By
EGRR President Hermine Scolnik
The past month has been quieter than usual with regard to
adoptions. We had only 2
adoptions to date. Nikki, was
returned to us by her family who couldn’t cope with her opening the
doors and getting out. She was adopted by a former adopter the following
day. Cuervo was
returned by his foster-to-adopt family because of allergies and he too
went to his “forever” home. Little Bear will be officially adopted on October 11th,
after his visit with Dr. Correa.
Dogs currently in foster-to-adopt homes may already be
adopted by the time you read this.
These include Jet, Fudge
and Brittney, the father and
daughter pair, and Sport/Ragamuffin.
In addition to these, Pebbles/Lucy’s
adoption will be finalized, once we feel her owners are fully committed
to the terms of the adoption contract.
We are waiting for more information on Lucky/Lacey’s
health issues before that adoption can be finalized, and Buddy (yes, another one) is waiting to see if his foster mom, who
had back surgery, will be able to keep him.
It looks as if we may have finally found a home for Pudder,
who has been with her foster mom for months.
We just need the home visit to be completed, but on paper, it
looks like a perfect match. BamBam
and Baxter are just
hanging out at their foster homes, waiting to be adopted. Still being boarded at Clint Moore are Zeus Bear who completed his heartworm treatment, Max,
a crazy 9 month old puppy, and Bear/Bruiser,
who has weighed in at 105 lbs. Max and Zeus
Bear cannot go to homes with young children because they are too
exuberant. Bear/Bruiser
has a bad skin condition in addition to his weight problem.
Both are partially attributable to a thyroid problem.
He is very sweet, and will make a wonderful addition to any
household willing to work on his weight and skin.
Of course, there are still others waiting in the wings to join
the EGRR family.
Casey, the
third of our female puppies, is now doing poorly.
She has started to lose weight and her kidney function levels are
going up, which indicates the beginnings of kidney failure.
The remaining puppies have had monthly play dates, but it seems
that each month there is one less to play.
We got some really good news on Rusty, who I assumed had been helped to the Bridge by his owner. This
was the dog who needed prednisone to be able to breathe, however, the
drug caused him to exhibit “psychotic” behavior. The day after this
report was sent out, she called me to tell me that the Prozac had kicked
in, and the old Rusty was
back. We are happy to
report he is still doing well, and will probably have a wonderful life
now.
We still have living in foster homes in Key Largo, Elvis/Casey,
Rusty and Isabelle. Their owner had a leg amputated, so we do not think he
will be able to care for these 3 dogs, as well as his Lab that is being
cared for by Lab Rescue. We
have been trying to contact him to release the dogs to us, so that we
can begin to search for new homes; however, he has not responded to our
phone calls. We hope this
issue will be resolved shortly.

made, seconded and approved to accept the minutes from the last meeting
as published in the newsletter.
President’s Report:
Pat Andrews reported on the AKC recognizing the EvergladesGRC as a
Community Achievement Award Honoree for the work performed at Stranahan
High School and other schools and granting the club $1000. From what we
can determine from AKC records, we are the first Golden Retriever Club
in the US to receive this award. The money granted will be used solely
for furthering the education of the Golden Retriever breed, promoting,
responsible dog ownership, and career days and other public education
activities. Many thanks go to Kara Clark, Linda Rappaport, Pat Andrews,
and Hermine Scolnik for initiating and completing this venture.
Reminder
to the membership about the Fun Day In The Park on October 6th. Please
RSVP to Michele Panetta and let her know what you will be bringing, if
applicable, or if you will be donating $5 per person to cover cost of
food.
We
have set a date for our Joint Venture with EGRR Grooming & Santa.
Date is November 4 at Clint Moore Animal Hospital.
We are in need of volunteers and would like the club to come up
with a few items to donate or raffle off.
At this point we have groomers and always could use more.
Also we would need general help.
So please contact myself or Hermine to let us know you will be
helping.
Vice President’s Report: November
meeting: November 4th is Grooming with Santa, in joint venture
with EGRR at the Clint Moore Animal Hospital. Set up is @ 9:30 am,
meeting will be held @ 10 am. The Grooming will begin at 11 am and end
at 4pm. Discussion was held
regarding the location for the Awards Banquet, set for 12/1. A few
different places are being considered at this time.
EGRC will be making 2 more presentations; one at Stranahan High
School is in the process of being scheduled, and the other is at
Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary School, where Kara is teaching and
does not yet have a firm date. At Stranahan, we have been asked to
expand our program to include ESE students, which include those who are
educable mentally handicapped and the trainable mentally handicapped.
Kara would like to suggest that EGRC include adult groups in our visits
with the dogs.
Treasurer's Report:
Michelle Panetta gave a verbal report and in accordance with the
Board’s request, until the newsletter is published under the password
protected portion of our website, it will not appear in the on-line
minutes.
Secretary's Report:
Cindy Metcalf and James Lee submitted their application for membership
as a family member. Due to their residence out of the geographic area an
adjustment was made to the membership. Cindi Metcalf and James Lee; they
will be Associate Members. They
did sign a Code of Ethics. This was their first reading.
First reading for a new applicant, Jane Lipson, applying for a single
membership. The Code of Ethics has been signed.
Multiple attempts have been made to contact Julie Rodriguez regarding
her application because her Code of Ethics has not been signed. We have
been unable to reach her.
Specialty Committee: Trophy
Chair Mary Kay Russell went over the trophy list for donations and
trophies for the 2008 Specialty. A
new item to be added will be doggie cookie jars with a paw on them in
various sizes, filled with treats.
New Business:
Linda Rappaport reported on schedule conflicts with Dr. Robert
Hutchinson for the end of March, early April, and beginning of August
next year. Attempts are
being made to schedule him so that member/exhibiters will not have a
conflict with out-of-area shows. Linda
was encouraged to check on his availability during the West Palm Beach
shows, since the odds were that everyone would be in town at that time.
Brags:
Pam Oxenberg: Rotten won the top 20 at the National! Treasure got a
Judges Award of Merit.
Pat Kopco and Mike Orloff: Zappa got his 2nd and 3rd
SH legs; Jagger earned his 8th and 9th SH legs.

October Brags
EGRC
members and their dogs scattered throughout the country this month and
no matter how close or how far from home, showed the audience what we
already know—that EGRC Goldens are simply the best! Just take a look
at these brags!
Agility
U-CH/U-CD/HR UH/Int’l CH Deauxquest Midknight Rambler CD, RAE3, SH,
WCX, VC, “Jagger,” and U-CH/HR/Int’l
CH Bridgeton’s Dancin’ Fool JH, RN, WC, “Zappa” participated
in their first agility trial, held by the Miami Obedience Club at
Tropical Park, and both boys had a great weekend. “Jagger”
finished in the ribbons practically each time, going three for four,
earning a First, a Second and a Third
Place!!! He would have
been a perfect four for four if
he hadn't dropped a bar on the last jump (the double) of his first
standard run. His owners and handlers, Mike Orloff and Pat Kopco, report
that they haven’t trained much with him, but that “Jagger”
just gets this agility game, and if you show him something once or
twice, he just goes out and does it!
As
for half-brother “Zappa,”
well, he was kind of like “Woody,”
(U-AGI Belevedere Morning Wood
Kyrie NA, NAP, NAJ, OJP, TDI) except like “Woody”
on speed! He went 0 for 4, doing whatever HE wanted to do but he did all
his contacts and had a great time, just like “Woody,”
who had been a real crowd-pleaser.
Both “Jagger” and “Zappa”
have been super-busy and you don’t want to miss their brags in the
Field
section too!
There
were some other EGRC Goldens taking home ribbons at the Miami agility
trial. Judy
Leitzsch’s beautiful boy, Buddy
CD, RN, AX, MXJ, NF, “Buddy,” earned his MX
(Master Agility Excellent) title on Saturday, September 22,
2007!!! It was his 10th leg
which was a long time coming. He also placed Fourth!
Judy says that she has earned 9 legs with “Buddy” in the past year, yet he has not qualified in the
Standard class in all of that time. He got frightened of the
teeter and would refuse it or jump off of it. It took lots of
training and practice and patience to get him over it. She was
beginning to think that the day would never come. But he qualified
on Sunday, September 23 in the Standard again with no teeter trouble!!!
He got a Third Place in JWW on
Sunday for a double Q toward his MACH.
“Buddy” also earned his final
two legs in Open FAST ,
both Fourth Places too, which gave him his title in that
event and moves him up to Ex A FAST for the next trial. He jumps
24."
His
roommate, Cassidy’s Baby, CD,
RA, MX, MXJ, AXP, AJP, NF, “Lucy,” also Q'd twice in EXB
Standard 20" , once in EXB JWW and twice in Open FAST (one was
a Third Place finish), for her Open Fast title too!!! All in all, it was another excellent
weekend for Judy and her kids, as we can all see by just looking at the
photo of Judy and “Buddy”
below!

“Buddy” and owner/handler Judy Leitzsch celebrate his 10th leg for his MX title and his Fourth Place finish in the EXB Std 24” class! “Buddy” had a great experience at the Miami agility trials, also earning his OF title. Judy provided this photo. |

Doll” is owned and loved by her breeders, Pam and Jerry Oxenberg.
Pam
and Jerry also had good news to report from Seattle, Washington, home of
this year’s National Specialty. Multiple
BIS, BISS CH Happy Hour Highmark Toasty, SDHF, “Rotten,” was
this year’s winner of the “Top
Twenty” Gala!!! This
annual black tie event is judged by three breeder/sporting group judges,
and features only the top champions of the past year.
Admission to the event and the popular auction normally results
in one of the biggest fund-raisers for the Golden Retriever Foundation.
The Oxenbergs also took home the top prize in 2003, with a “Rotten”
cousin, CH Toasty’s Hello Dolly, SDHF, “Dolly.” Later
in the week, a “Dolly” niece, CH
Toasty’s Treasure Island, “Treasure,” JAM’ed!!
Other
EGRC members did well on the east coast.
Taking WD for Team
Toasty on Friday, September 21 in “Hot’lanta” was one of “Treasure’s” brothers, Toasty’s
Mandalay Bay, “Jack,”
owned by Cathy Kollman, and Pam!!!
From
Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dennis Williams reports that after an enjoyable
couple of days visiting with dear friends Barry and Wendy Messer and old
buddy “Tucker” in the
gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains, the EagleRidge gang got down to business.
EagleRidge's Gold Dust,
“Dusty,” took Best BBE, and
BBE Group 1, at the tender age of 11 months!!! He is co-owned by
Mike Herrington and Dennis. “Dusty’s”
daddy, CH EagleRidge Pot At The End Of The Rainbow, “Yukon,” took
another BOB, and his
mom, EagleRidge's Mamma Cassie,
“Cassie,” won WB!!!
“Cassie” now needs just a
single point to finish her Championship.

have some very good news to report from the Mid-FloridaGRC fall hunt
trials.
First, “Zappa”
has learned to control himself and he passed the Senior Hunter tests both days that weekend for his 2nd
and 3rd legs!!!
“Jagger”
didn’t want to let his half-brother get the better of him.
He also did well, passing on Saturday, September 8, for his 8th
Senior Hunter leg, and nailed the test as test dog on Sunday!!!
They were both very proud of themselves (as were mom and dad, Pat
Kopco and Mike Orloff, who also are their handlers).
Pat and Mike sent a photo of “Zappa”
in action that you don’t want to miss! “Zappa”
and “Jagger” also both
have brags in the Agility
section, so make sure you didn’t
skip that section and read all about it!

Nautilus
Erin Go Bragh, JH, “Chelsea,” not only enjoys the breed ring, she also has a
great time out in the field, as evidenced by her recent performance at
the Mid-Florida hunt trials. She went with her owner/handler, Nancy
Greenbarg, to their first Senior Hunt outing and she made her mommy very
proud, earning her 1st
SH leg!!! Nancy sent a photo that demonstrates “Chelsea”
is a bitch with “Show And Go!”

the following brag after earning another JH
leg!!!
“Dear
Aunt Linda (Rappaport):
I got
my third Junior Hunter leg
this weekend (September 8 -9) at Mid-Florida. I missed my title by
3 feet. I saw a duck drop from the sky after hearing it call and
after they shot it. I went out in the water to get it and I
ran into a faker. I looked at the decoy and said: "I saw
a duck drop here but I'm not bringing you back to mom! You're fake.
She wants a real one. I knew where the other duck was.
I'll go check there again and see if there is another real one I can
bring back to mom.”
Alas,
there was no second duck in the first spot so I came back with nothing.
I thought Mom was going to be mad but she was still thrilled I did
so well on the first three ducks.
On
Sunday (September 9) I was determined to do all 4 for her. The ones
on land were harder than Saturday. The weeds and grass was much
higher and the marks were longer. The first land one surprised
her. I went straight out and got it--like I had x-ray vision.
Even though I got plenty of time to pee, I still had to go so
on my way out for the second land duck I stopped and lifted my leg. When
I do that, I kinda get distracted by what I'm supposed to do. When
I stopped lifting my leg I went my usual way to the right. Mom told
the judge I tend to go right and I did. She also told the judges
that I would remember where I was supposed to go and do a 180 turn
around and come back to where the duck is or keep going. I
remembered. I did a 180 to the left. I picked up the duck
and came back to mom with a little side trip to pee again. I don't
know why she gets upset when I do that A boy has to do what
a boy has to do! Right?
Anyway,
we passed this part and got called back for the water retrieve. I
went out for the first duck and went a little to the left but I found it
and I swam back. Mom was in SHOCK. I usually find land and
bank around. I don't like to swim that much. I really should
listen to her and come back the way I went out. It's so much
easier and faster. On Saturday I had banked around the edge
of the pond and had to climb up the bank through mud and stuff.
It really tired me out more then swimming. You should see this
picture!

“Duncan” doesn’t mind a little mud while earning his 3rd
JH leg at the
Mid-FloridaGRC trials!
“Duncan” is
owned and loved by his breeder and hander, Michele Panetta, who
sent this photo. |
Anyway,
on the second water duck mom tried to block me from going along the pond
edge but I just pushed past her and followed the shore line but I
eventually got in the water and swam for the duck. You thought I
learned my lesson on Saturday about banking back but I got out of the
water and went left around the pond. Only this time I didn't
follow the edge and went higher up into the tall grass. She
couldn't see me and I couldn't see her but she kept telling me I was a
good boy and to COME ON. She didn't shut up one second while I was
coming back. I think she thought I wouldn't find her. I also
think she had the judges tell her not to talk to me so much next time.
They could have failed me. All because of her big mouth!
Aunt
Camille (Doehring) from Mid-Florida used her girl as the test dog.
She went out for the duck but wouldn't bring it back to Camille.
Camille kept calling her but then she yelled “OH NO, she's taking it
back to the van!” And sure enough, her dog brought the duck to the
van, jumped up and put it in her crate. It was so funny.
Another dog brought back the decoys. Can't wait until
November!”
Signed,
Duncan MacLeod

The Pact of the Fire

A Lakota Sioux Legend
When
the world was created, First Man and First Woman struggled to stay alive
and warm through the first winter.
First Dog struggled also. Deep
in the winter, First Dog gave birth to her pups.
Each night, she huddled in the brush of the forest, longingly
watching the fire, which kept First Man and First Woman warm.
First
Winter was severe, so cold that First Dog dared not leave her pups to
search for food to fill her own belly, fearing that her pups would
freeze to death in her absence. She
curled around them, but the wind was bitter.
Her
belly shrank with hunger, and soon she had no milk. The smallest pup
perished, and First Dog felt her own life draining away as she struggled
to care for the remaining pups. Fearing
for the fate of the others, she knew she had no choice but to approach
the fire and ask First Woman and First Man to share their food and the
fire's warmth.
Slowly,
she crept to the fire and spoke to First Woman, who was heavy with
child. I am a mother, said
First Dog, and soon you will be a mother too.
I want my little ones to survive, just as you will want your
little one to survive. So I
will ask you to make a pact.
First
Woman and First Man listened. I
am about to die. Take my
pups. You will raise them
and call them Dog. They
will be your guardians. They
will alert you to danger, keep you warm, guard your camp, and even lay
down their life to protect your life and the lives of your children.
They
will be companions to you and all your generations, never leaving your
side, as long as Mankind shall survive.
In return, you will share your food and the warmth of your fire.
You will treat my children with love and kindness, and tend to
them if they become ill, just as if they were born from your own belly.
And if they are in pain, you will take a sharp knife to their
throat, and end their misery. In
exchange for this, you will have the loyalty of my children and all
their offspring until the end of time.
First
Man and First Woman agreed. First
Dog went to her nest in the brush, and with the last of her strength,
one by one, she brought her pups to the fire. As she did so, First Woman
gave birth to First Child, wrapped her in Rabbit skins, and nestled
First Child among the pups by the fireside.
First Dog lay down by the fire, licked her pups, then walked away
to die under the stars.
Before
she disappeared into the darkness, she turned and spoke once more to
First Man. "My
children will honor this pact for all generations.
But if Man breaks this pact, if you or your children's children
deny even one dog food, warmth, a kind word or a merciful end, your
generations will be plagued with war, hunger and disease, and so this
shall remain until the pact is honored again by all Mankind."
With this, First Dog entered the night, and returned in spirit to
the creator.
You
Can Help In Golden Retriever Cancer Research
As
we all know, Golden Retrievers have a high incidence of cancer, with a
1998 Health Survey (http://grca.org/healthsurvey.pdf) indicating that
57% of females and 66% of males will be affected. According to these
studies, while many types of cancer are elevated in the breed,
approximately half of the totals are lymphoma (1 in 8 Goldens) and
hemangiosarcoma (1 in 5 Goldens).
The
Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA) and the Golden Retriever
Foundation (GRF) have dedicated significant resources to improving
Golden health, and they are actively supporting numerous research
studies investigating cancer in the breed. The results of these studies
are regularly published in premier medical journals, and translate into
improved care opportunities. For example, a recently published study
(Modiano JF, Breen M, Burnett RC, Parker HG, Incuse S, Thomas R, Avery
PR, Lindblad-Toh K, Ostrander EA, Cutter GC, Avery AC) on Distinct
B-cell and T-cell lymphoproliferative disease prevalence among dog
breeds indicates heritable risk. Cancer Res. 2005 Jul 1;65(13):5654-61.)
This study shows that unlike published averages for all breeds (67%
B-cell, 23% T-cell), Golden Retriever lymphomas are more heavily
weighted toward T-cell disease (54%) rather than B-cell disease (46%).
This information has the potential to impact therapy decisions, as
owners and veterinarians can take breed specific data into consideration
when they explore treatment options.
In
addition to financial support, the GRCA and GRF aid researchers in
obtaining vital tissue and/or blood samples from affected dogs. There is
a link to a Cancer Sample Donation Chart with contact information for
several of the programs investigating various cancers in Golden
Retrievers. Owners do not need to be members of GRCA to participate.
Here is the link: http://www.grca.org/health/cancerdonation.pdf.
Many
owners are comforted knowing that samples from their affected dog may
benefit other dogs in the future. The GRCA and GRF hope that you will
consider discussing sample donation if the sad day ever arrives that
your Golden Retriever is diagnosed with (or suspected of having) cancer.
